Black Swish tops Goshen on Neff’s night

By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANEE On the night when North Wood honored head coach Steve Neff for his 600th victory, achieved earlier in the season, there was no way the North Wood High School girls basketball team was going to spoil it by letting Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) rival Goshen come in and steal a win. And thanks to 19 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore center Morgan Olson, the Black Swish made it that much more special for Neff by downing the Redskins 57-47. The victory improved the Class 3A #3-ranked Black Swish to 15-2 on the season, 4-1 in the NLC and bed atop the conference standings with Elkhart Memorial. North Wood was cold to start the game, but a coast-to-coast drive and basket by lightning-quick point guard De'Yahnna Styles sparked the Panthers as they opened up a 19-12 lead after one period. Olson was spectacular in the paint, sconng 10

first quarter points, six on offensive rebounds while going a perfect 4 of 4 from the field and 2 of 2 from the charity stripe. In the second quarter, Goshen's aggressive match-up zone bothered North Wood and limited Olson's touches, but Styles made up for it on the defensive end, converting two more steals into baskets and adding four assists in the period, both to Olson as the Black Swish took a 34-26 lead to the locker room. North Wood gave the pesky Redskins some of their own medicine by opening the third quarter in a zone and-rapidly opened a 15-point advantage on yet another steal and hoop by the relentless Styles, capping an 11-4 Panther run. Only the heroics of Goshen point guard Aimee Svvihart, who poured in 11 of her team's 13 third-quarter points, kept it from being an all-out rout. The Black Swish played conservatively in the fourth quarter, protecting a doubledigit lead and continuing to harass the Redskins into

more turnovers. Swihart kept firing for Goshen, scoring four more points, but it was too little, too late as North Wood coasted to a 57-47 win, the 606th for Neff, who is in his 35th year at die helm of the Black Swish. Olson's double-double led all scorers while Styles added 13 points, five assists and five steals for the winners. Freshman standout Jordyn Frantz chipped in with 12 points including a pair of three-point-ers. Swihart was the only Redskin in double figures with 18, while senior Hailey Warrick added 8 for Goshen. In the opening JV contest, the Black Swish JV squad continued their stellar season, improving their record to 14-1, 5-0 in the NLC by topping Goshen 27-17. Taylor Fielstra poured in 13 points for North Wood while Taylor Stutzman added eight. North Wood (15-2, 4-1 NLC) has a three-game week, beginning with a home game against South Bend Riley Jan. 24 and a road visit to Lakeland Jan.

Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANEE/GOSHEN - After an ice-cold first period in which the host Goshen Redskins took a 15-5 lead, the North Wood Panther boys basketball team battled back and actually took the lead in the fourth quarter. But clutch baskets by the Redskins' Austin Henke and Jesse Good down the stretch were the difference as Goshen downed North Wood 38-36 in Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) action. The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the NLC, spoiling a chance for a win streak after North Wood topped Lakeland 62-49 in The Pit earlier in the week. GOSHEN 38, NORTHWOOD 36 Against Goshen, the Panthers went 0 for 10 outside the paint, the only baskets being off two offensive rebounds by jumping-jack senior forward Jakayah Qaiyim. The Redskins, meanwhile, knocked down three treys in the opening stanza, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the Saturdayaftemoon contest postponed from the previous night by snow. The Panthers began to find the range in the second Starter and also turned up e defensive intensity, holding the host Redskins without a field goal for the entire

eight minutes. Sophomores Zach Zurcher and Jonathan Wilkinson each had 4 points as North Wood outscored Goshen 10-3 in the quarter to trail just 18-15 at halftime. North Wood cut the Redskin lead to 21-20 halfway through the third period but Goshen ran off six straight before sophomore Kyle McCoy drained a three to make it 27-24 Redskins with eight minutes to play. Finally, with just less than seven minutes remaining, a three-pointer from the right baseline by North Wood's Tommy Klem gave the Panthers their first lead at 29-27. The lead then changed hands several times, as both teams struggled to find the mark from outside until finally, a hard-driving Qaiyim put the Panthers in front 34-33 at the 2:04 mark. Back came the Redskins, with Henke knocking down his third triple of the night to give the lead back to Goshen, but Qaiyim responded on a rebound basket to tie the score at 36 all with 25 seconds left. After a timeout, Goshen got the ball to Good who beat his defender and lofted a high, soft layup over a leaping Zurcher that kissed off the glass and through the twine with just three seconds remaining, making it 38-36 Redskins. North Wood had one last shot but the inbounds pass was tipped and Braxton Miller's tnreepoint attempt was late and short as Goshen escaped

Goshen was paced by 15 points from Good and 10 from Henke NORTHWOOD 62, LAKELAND 49 Earlier in the week, North Wood snapped a twogame losing streak by using a strong fourth quarter to pull away from a scrappy Lakeland squad and pick up a much needed 62-49 home win. The Panthers led most of the way but held just "a four-point advantage going to the final period before shutting the lights out on the Lakers with a 21-12 fourth-period advantage. North Wood placed four players in double figures, led by Qaiyim and Zurcher with 16 points each. Miller added 12 and Wilkinson 11 for the winners. Lakeland was led by 16 points each from Jason Richardson and Sam Mortola. JV UPDATE The Panther JV team improved to 11-2 by rolling over Lakeland 44-22, then edging Goshen 33-30 when Kyle McCoy drained a shot from behind half-court at the buzzer.
