Panthers fall to Northridge in OT
By Steve Sittler Correspondent NAPPANEE Despite another Herculean effort by sophomore post man Zach Zurcher who posted nis third straight double-double, the North Wood Panthers boys basketball team could not overcome 21 turnovers and dropped a hardfought Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) contest to the Northridge Raiders by the score of 71-65 in overtime. The loss was the second straight for the Panthers, who fell 65-59 at New Prairie earlier in the week, dropping their record to 4-7 overall and 1-2 in the NLC. NORTHRIDGE 71, NORTHWOOD 65 OT Things looked bright early for the host Panthers, as they bolted out of the gate to a 14-0 lead in the first > five minutes, however North Wood coach Aaron Wolfe made a mass substitution, and the Panthers' momentum halted as the Raiders then ran off 12 straight points before Zurcher stopped them with a short jumper. The period ended with North Wood clinging to a 16-12 advantage. In the second quarter, the turnover bug that has plagued the Panthers all season began biting with a vengeance, as the Raiders turned up the defensive intensity. Were it not for the board work of Zurcher and senior Jakayah Qaiyim, things could have gotten bad quickly for North Wood, but a combined 12 points from the pair offset the eight second-stanza turnovers and kept the Panthers in the lead at 33-29 going to the locker room. Northridge finally managed to draw even at 38 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter, then took the lead at the 2:09 mark on a 3-pointer by freshman Pete Smith. North Wood, meanwhile, struggled from the field, shooting just 1 of 6 not counting the relentless Zurcher who poured in seven more points on 3 of 3 from the field to keep his team alive. Sophomore center Nate Ritchie led the charge for the Raiders, scoring eight points in the period including 4 of 4 from the char-

ity stripe, boosting Northridge to a 48-43 lead with eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Raiders attempted to push their advantage as the fourth period began, but Qaiyim's excellent work on the glass began to pay off and the Panthers regained the lead 53-52 on a rebound bucket by the sturdy 6'2" senior with 3:50 left. North Wood pushed the advantage to 58-52 on two more buckets by Zurcher but Northridge quickly rallied to tie on an old-fashioned 3-point play by Sam Ahonen and a trey by Gavin Blyly to force the overtime session. The extra period got off to an inauspicious start for the Panthers as they turned the ball over just 10 seconds into the four-minute session and Ahonen converted at the Raiders end. Northridge got into the double-bonus after another turnover and foul by the Panthers at the 2:14 mark and drained eight of 12 free throws in the overtime to seal the win. North Wood shot nearly 60 percent for the game, thanks in large part to Zurcher who led all scorers with 27 points on 11 of 14 from the field, and also hauled down 11 rebounds for his third straight double-double. Qaiyim added 16 points and seven boards and Braxton Miller and Jonathan Wilkinson chipped in with 7 points each for the Panthers. Ahonen and Blyly each scored 20 points to pace the Raiders, while Ritchie chipped in with 13 points, 11 in the pivotal second half.
