ever did in my life," he said. Through the years, Neff watched things change. The buses got bigger. They went from manual to power steering. They switched from being powered by only gasoline to running on diesel fuel, and in the beginning, they weren't equipped with communication radios. "When the roads got bad in the winter they'd call you and tell you to stay home," he said. "Some wouldn't get the call and one bus would be staying put and the other would be going. Radios made that a lot better." Another change he has seen is that in the early '6os most school bus drivers were men where "now about 90 percent are women." "But of course that was a different era," Neff explained. At one point he drove a double route starting with transporting the elementary students and then the junior and high school students, until eventually routes were streamlined. Then, he had children of all ages on one bus." I'd put the older students in the back and the younger ones up front," he said. "It's just a good way to do it so you can keep an eye on them. But I was lucky. I always had a pretty good bunch."

And though he claims to have been known to "run a tight ship," likely the kids thought they had a pretty good driver too. " I'd find pennies and nickels on the floor and when I'd ask, no one would own them," Neff said of a practice he became known for by circumstance. "I'd put them in the ashtray and men it would just fill up. I told them, since it wasn't any of their money, I would buy them a treat. Back then you could get Tootsie Roll Pops for a penny so I bought them and put buckets in the front and the back of the bus. I told them I didn't want to see any papers or sticks and if they didn't mind, I told them, 'I can't do this for you.'" He said that the students did listen and from then on, even years afterward when he was finding dimes and quarters under the seats rather than pennies and nickels, he continued to treat them. 'They listened and I never had to pick up papers or sticks. I only had to sweep out gravel they brought in from their shoes," he said. Neff explained that he was surprised to hear that he would be honored for this years working for the Wa-Nee School Corporation and that he learned about it by accident. "I go (to the

games) because my son (Steve) is the coach for the girls basketball team and my sister called to tell me she was sorry that she wasn't going to be able to come," he said. "I found out about an hour beforehand." He said it was "real nice" to have been awarded with a plaque and recognized in front of the crowd. "I always had nice people to work for all those years and good, cooperative drivers," said Neff. What he was most rewarding for him was the connections he made while employed for the schools. "I go down the street and someone will remember me from years back," he said. "You do get attached to some of the kids. I'm sure that everyone driving a bus would agree with me that it's very rewarding." Neff and his (second) wife Margaret have been married for almost 12 years have a total of seven children and 22 grandchildren. The couple lives in Heritage Acres in Nappanee. To those thinking about a career in busing children to and from school but that are unsure if they are right for the job he advices: "Anyone can drive a bus; it's big but you get used to it you just really have to like kiijis."

said Tanner's mother, Beth Fervida. "He's been wanting to do this for a long time. Flying alone is a big deal for anyone, but especially for a teenager!" Tanner grew up around planes, flying with his family to vacations and events from the time he was 6 months old. He became interested in getting his private pilot's license, however, after he and Jeff flew an antique plane to Alaska together in June on a father/ son trip. "That (trip) gave him

the motivation to get his license," said Jeff. Now that he's flown solo, Tanner has what Jeff calls "a license to learn." He can fly on his own within a 30 mile radius of the Nappanee airport, and will continue lessons with his flight instructor. Tanner will be practicing different techniques and mastering night flying. Beth said that she thinks Tanner might be interested in a career in flying. He expressed interest in flying for the United States Postal Service or FedEx.

The Fervidas are farmers, so Beth said that Tanner might try to combine flying and farming. He has plenty of sources for advice besides his father, other members of the family have their pilot's licenses too. "He likes to farm," said Jeff, "but when he was a freshman 1 encouraged him to try flying." Tanner has plenty of time to decide on a career, however he won't be able to get his private pilot's license until he turns 17 next December.
