Panthers gain split in holiday tournament
' By Steve Sittlck Correspondent ROCHESTER After dropping a 70-68 double overtime heartbreaker to Tippecanoe Valley in the opening round of die Winning Edge Holiday Tournament at Rochester, the North Wood Panthers boys' basketball team used a huge third quarter to defeat Michigan City Marquette 77-59 to earn third place in the tournament. % The win improved due young Panthers to 3-4 in the 2011 portion of the season and provided some much-needed momentum heading into the heart of the always-tough Northern Lakes Conference (NLQ schedule in January. TIPPECANOE VALLEY 70, NORTHWOOD 68 In the opening round of the tournament the Panthers faced an equally-youthful Tippecanoe Valley squad, whose starting lineup featured just one senior as does North Wood's. Behind the hot shooting of freshman guard Braxton Miller and sophomores Jonathan Wilkinson, and Zach Zurcher, North Wood opened up an 18-10 lead after one period. Valley junior Nick Kindis kept his team in it with five firstperiod points. The second period could have been a chance for North Wood to widen the lead, as Valley struggled from die field, but four Panther turnovers and enough fouls to put the Vikings in the bonus early in the

period resulted in a 24-17 halftime advantage for North Wood. The second half began with a foul-fest, as eight infractions were whistled in die first four minutes of the third period alone, including die fourth foul on fiery Panther point guard Derek Yoder, sending the floor leader to the pine at the 4:17 mark. Sophomore Tanner Andrews had five points in the quarter as Valley began to dominate die glass and cut North Wood's lead to 35-31 with eight minutes to play. Finally, with 4:48 to play in the game, die Vikings took their first lead of the night at 40 all on a bucket by Andrews, but die Panthers ran off five quiac points to regain die lead at 45-43 on a beautiful lob from Miller to Wilkinson. Valley regained the lead at 50-49 when Kindig hit one of two free throws, and expanded die margin to 52-49 with 23 seconds left on two more Kindig charity tosses, setting the stage for a dramatic three-pointer by North Wood's Miller with 9 seconds remaining to tie the score at 52 and send the game to overtime. In the first OT session, North Wood jumped out to an early lead but Valley sophomore Robby Groom canned his third trey of the night to tie the score at 59 all with 1:10 remaining. After an offensive foul by North Wood, Valley had a chance to take the lead but super-sub Tommy Klem blocked a Viking shot and gave the Panthers a final possession to go for the win. North Wood placed three players in double figures, led by 21 from Wilkinson who got 16 of his points in the second half and overtime. Miller chipped in with 19 points, including three treys, and Klem had 15 while also dragging down seven rebounds.
