Wa*Nee, from front

The Wa-Nee district has been working with Energy Education local coordinator Lisa Streib since the spring of 2010. Her three-year contract with the local schools is slated to end in 2013. Streib's role in the Wa-Nee school system is to share with administrators and educators the various ways that they can modify their daily routines to reduce wasteful energy E radices. In August, Streib gave a presentation to the school oard explaining some of the measures that have been adopted in the schools, induding the reduction of excessive lights, lessening the reliance on air conditioning during the summer months, and changing the routines on how and when the schools are being cleaned. At that time, Streib revealed that through the successful adaptation of these changes, the distrid was able to save just more than $200,000 in a 12-month period, a decrease of 22 percent over a typical annual usage. She will continue to conduct energy audits as necessary, and will also work with the administration to maintain and potentially improve upon their conservation endeavor. According to additional statistics released by Energy Education, the program delivers enormous environmental benefits by reducing the carbon footprint. The energy that is not wasted results in the prevention of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide emission. Wa-Nee Community Schools was able to conserve 13,441 MMBTU, the equivalent of 1,722 metric tons of carbon dioxide. More tangibly illustrated, that amounts to 309 cars removed from the road, or 44,309 pine trees grown for 10 years. "This energy program is an excellent vehicle to assist our personnel in practicing good stewardship of our resources. The willing participation of virtually every staff person faculty, administrators, food service, maintenance, and custodial staff adds to our success," said Wa-Nee superintendent Joe Sabo.
