travel regularly to hospitals in Indianapolis and Chicago for testing and treatment. Recently, hope for making J.P/s life a little more "average" appeared to be in reach. During a stay at Children's Memorial (Chicago), J.P.'s neuropsychiatrist informed the family that due to extreme underlying anxiety related to the neurological disorders, his body is reacting with physical symptoms (of the seizures) due to his brain's inability to cope symptoms which will stop only with the appropriate treatment. That treatment can be found at only four hospitals in the world, the closest hospital in Oconomowoc, Wis., five hours away from his home. "His heart condition is not that uncommon," his mother explained. "His esophageal condition is more rare but the psychogenic seizures are due to the anxiety and that is very rare, so rare that our family was asked to participate in a study because they are iust now doing research on this type of seizure." "For tne first time in months the family is hopeful that J.P. might get his life back," said fundraiser organizer and family friend Nicki Wiggins. "Unfortunately, the treatment he needs requires him to be a patient in a Wisconsin hospital for two to three months followed by an intensive outpatient program in Chicago for another month." "The therapy will help to retrain his brain so it

doesn't manifest into seizures," Sumpter Hce explained. "It will start with intense, 24-hour care (in Oconomowoc’, Wis.). After the hospital in Wisconsin, we will have to go to outpatient care from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. so 'home' will be Chicago, and we plan to come nome (to Nappanee) on the weekends." A full time job, caring for J.P. put the brakes on his mother's education years ago, but with all' the procedures and testings, she has become a specialist'in many other categories. Her husband of four years, Matt lice, does what he can with his family's situation on his salary as a Nappanee Police officer and while insurance pays much of what is incurred, the remaining charges continue to rise. "I've never tried to add it up," Sumpter lice said. "I know before insurance, the treatment in Wisconsin is $55,000 a month." Besides the hefty price medical treatments cost, the family, which includes J.P.'s 12-year-old brother Jack and 7-year-old stepbrother Luke (as well and grown stepsiblings Robbie, John and Amanda), faces even more obstacles such as paying for gas to and from his treatments, food while on the road, J.P.'s mother's stays at various hotels, and the five different medications J.P. takes each month. The family tries to keep J.P.'s life as normal as his medical conditions allow though his restrictions are tight. 'There's no indicator

of when the seizures will occur," his mother said. "His first day of high school he fell to the floor. He goes to Concord because tney have a special program and Wa-Nee buses him Awe. He goes three hours a day. ...He wants to ride a bike and I tell him he can't. I let him run around outside but you never know when he will have a seizure. He just can't be left alone at any time." J.P. is a typical teenage boy in that likes computers, science and of course video games and that he trudges through life, overcoming obstacles as he is faced with them. "He will have moments when he was worried about his health but he doesn't sit around thinking 'poor me,'" said Sumpter Tice. "It's just part of his life. When he's okay he's a regular happy kid." His mother is indicative that his positive outlook on life may nave been genetic. "I've always felt we could manage it, not 'wow, how can I can't afford this,'"Sumpter Tice said. "... In my heart I know this is the right thing for him to go. He's been seizing for a year now and he's had as many as 21 in three hours." But it is also the love and support she gets that helps her through, "We have awesome friends and family," she said. A five-member committee of the concerned friends and family are hosting a benefit for J.P. titled, "Life. Worth. Living." to offset the mountain of charges. It takes place at Borkholder's
