Jeff Burbrink, Purdue Extension Educator in Elkhart County, says that he has received numerous calls about invading insects this week. Burbrink said the annual invasion has been particularly heavy this year; as the marinated stink bug, a new species to Indiana, is becoming more established. The bug is a native of Japan, Korea and China and was first reported in the United States in Pennsylvania in 1998. It also has been found in other states, including Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and Kentucky. The stink bug gets its name because it releases a pungent smell as a defensive mechanism when threatened. The insect can invade houses in the fall, much like the multicolored Asian lady beetle that settled in the community in the early 19905. Invaders like Asian lady beetles and stink bugs will not cause damage while in a home but will be annoying and smell bad when disturbed. Experiences in other parts of the country indicate that the brown marmorated stink bug first will

be a pest in homes for a few yean before it becomes a ®op pest As with the Asian lady beetle; Burbrink said homeowners should take steps that indude caulking annind windows and repairing screens to prevent invasion. Burbrink advised against using insectiddes in the home living space. 'Once the stink bugs are inside, they can be vacuumed up and disposed of," he said. "Homeowners should discard their vacuum deaner bag immediately after use because Are stink bugs will begin to stink when collected by the vacuum deaner." To keep the insects from coming into homes in mass numbers, Burbrink said that homeowners can also apply a residual insectidde as a barrier around the exterior of the home. Barrier sprays are commonly sold at local garden centers and are sold under many names. Burbrink said to apply these products along the foundation of the home, the walls and eaves, any place the insects begin to congregate. A mote important concern is for farmers because the stinkbugs have become a serious crop pest on Are east coast. Burbrink said the new spedes of stinkbug uses its sucking mouthparts to feed on a variety of plants, inducting most fruit crops,
