Panthers down Wawasee in sectional opener
By Stcvi Strum Correspondent NAPPANEE After completely dominating the Wawasee Warriors in the first halt running up a 14-0 lead and holding the Warriors to just 50 yards of offense, the North Wood Panthers went silent in the second halt but the Black Crunch defense came to die rescue as the Panthers escaped with a 14-10 win in die opening round of die Class 4A sectional. The game ultimately came down to a final-play interception by North Wood's Tanner Roberts on die Panther 10-yard line, his second pick of die night to end Warrior hopes and avenge a regularseason loss by North Wood to their NLC rivals. Following opening series' of three-and-out by both teams, the Panthers grabbed the early advantage after a short Wawasee punt placed the ball at the Warrior 44-yard line. After picking up a quick first down, Neath Wood senior quarterback Zac Coleman scrambled right on third and 13 and found classmate Taylor Anglemyer open in the end zone for a 32-yard scoring strike. Brendan Widner tacked on die PAT and the Panthers led 7-0 just six minutes into the game. North Wood then got another break as a bad snap on a punt attempt by the Warriors gave the ball to the Panthers at the Wawasee 43-yard line, but a hobbled handoff on an attempted inside reverse gave the ball right back to the Warriors. Wawasee quickly moved into Panther territory on three straight runs by sophomore fullback Gabe Rhodes but on die next play, Wawasee quarterback Bauer Schmeltz saw his pass attempt bounce off his intended receiver and into the hands of North Wood's Roberts, who returned the pick 35 yards to the Warrior 30-yard line. Six plays later; the Panthers were in the end zone as Coy Brown simply trampled the right side of the Wawasee defense, bulling in from seven yards out to make it 14-0 Panthers at the 10:34 mark of the second period. Neither team threatened for the remainder of the half and North Wood took the 14-0 lead to the locker room, having surrendered a mere 50 yards of offense to Wawasee while piling up 143 yards of their own. In die second half, North Wood stopped Wawasee's first drive on a diving intercep-

tion by Anglemyer, but could make no headway against the suddenly stiff Warrior defense, punting the ball back to Wawasee who took over at their own 30-yard line. The Warriors then mounted an incredible 17-play drive (aided by a highly-ouestionable pass interference call against tne Panthers that would have killed me drive at midfield) that ate nine minutes off the dock. The drive culminated on the first play of the fourth period when Schmeltz appeared to be stuffed by Brown on a third-down attempt from the one-yard line but was ruled to have gotten the pigskin over the goal line for a score. Warrior kicker Kyle Clevenger added the PAT and suddenly, the Warriors were right back in it, trailing just 14-7. North Wood initially responded to the score by moving quickly to midfield on a 13-yard run by Andrew Hahn, but consecutive penalties put the ball back at the Panther

25-yard line. North Wood then made the situation worse by fumbling another handoff, giving Wawasee a first-down at the Panther 25. After allowing the Warriors to pick up a first down, the Black Crunch defense stopped Schmeltz on a third-down run and forced a 25-yard field-goal attempt which Clevenger converted, narrowing the Panther lead to 14-10. Again North Wood could do nothing on offense, going three-and-out, but the defense saved the day when Evan Chanley stopped Schmeltz on a fourth-down scramble and gave the ball back to the Panthers with 1:27 remaining. Using their hoarded timeouts, Wawasee was able to force yet another Panther punt which turned out to be a 15-yard shank that sailed out-of-bounds near midfield with 31 seconds left. After three incompletions, Schmeltz found Andrew Hepler for 15 yards to move the ball to the Panther 37 with 16 seconds left
