Jake Mattem 90th Richard H. "Jake' Mattem will celebrate his 90th birthday Saturday, Sept 24. His parents were Charles and Ruby Mattem and they raised three sons: John, Richard and Thomas. Upon graduation from Wakarusa High School in 1939, Jake worked for his uncle Ross Sawyer and entered the Army in 1942. Discharged in late 1945, Jake married his longtime sweetheart, Ellen Jean 'Hennie" Pippen in January of 1946. Mattem's career was spent primarily in the retail and wholesale meat business. He
first worked for Hollar's Meat Market in Nappanee and in the mid 1960 s Jake and Robert 'Boots' Ingram started Super Steer Meat Company in Goshen. Upon his retirement, his son Bill Mattem continued the business until 2010. Jake and Hennie have a son, Thomas D., William (Bill) and Lisa; grandchildren: Dustin, Heidi, Austin and Maria; and great-grandchildren: Charlie, Brennen and Mya. Police looking for hit-and-run driver WAKARUSA Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver that sideswiped a car Sept. 14 on S.R. 19 at C.R. 32. At 5:42 a.m. Tom Hiatt, 54, Leesburg, w»s driving north on S.R. 19 when a vehicle traveling south crossed left of the center line and sideswiped his vehicle before driving on. A maroon piece of fiberglass and a reflector were recorded at the scenic by police. Police are looking for anyone with information about the vehicle, or the accident (as mere were two vehicles at the time who's drivers may have witnessed the accident) to call the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department at ask for Cpl. Casey Lehman at 574-891-2175 or via email at dehman9elkhartcountysheriff.com. Driver runs off after crash A Nappanee man was found after running off after an accident on C.R. 3 in Nappanee. A chase began on C.R. 1350 around 11:30 pjn. Sept. 17 when Sgt. Josh Hamer (an off duty officer) observed a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer driving recklessly. He called for backup from the Nappanee Police Department and Patrolman Nik Havert observed the vehide at C.R. 56 at C.R. 100 as it was speeding. < The chase continued as tire Blazer north on C.R. 3 at the C.R. 52 intersection when the vehide turned off its headlights and officers lost sight of it until they came upon it after it had overturned in a com field on the northwest comer of C.R. 3-and C.R. 52. The driver fled on foot while Tyler Hochstetler, 18, Nappanee, a passenger in the vehide, was left at the scene. Hochstetler was taken to a local hospital for lacerations to his right arm. Police later located the driver, Andrew Slabaugh, 18, Nappanee, at home. Police are still investigating the case. Arrests • Ashley D. Pruitt, 19, Nappanee, was arrested Sept. 9 by the Goshen Police Department for theft. • John H. Thompson, 32, Nappanee, was arrested Sept. 12 by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department for domestic battery. • Matthew D. Powell, 22, Nappanee, was arrested Sept. 14 by the Elkhart Police Department for contempt. • Derren S. Lengacher, 24, Wakarusa, was arrested Spet. 15 by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department for leaving the scene of an acddent and operating while intoxicated.
