When I think about the month of July, inevitably I dunk of two things: the county fair and dry, hot weather. Who knows what we will experience in 2011, but if we have a normal season, fanners and gardeners will be turning on their irrigation systems for good reason. When irrigating, a good rule of thumb for just about every situation is to give the crop, whether it is com or your yard, a good, thorough soaking, and then wait several days to reapply the water if Mother Nature does provide some.

County fairs are in full schedule and they are a great place to make for stay-cations, or vacations close to home. I truly enjoy visiting county fairs and find it difficult to understand when people share with me that they have never been to the county fair where they live. For those of us who had 4-H program experiences growing up the fair was an important part of our summer. I love county fairs, visiting with people that I only see once a year, and viewing the dedicated work of 4-Hers and open class exhibitors are some of the highlights. I also enjoy watching the livestock shows, visiting with friends and, of course the food! I know many fairgoers for whom the food is the highlight! Many of the county fairs in the Indiana and Michigan area have open class competitions that include a variety of food contests including baking, cake decorating and outdoor cooking. At the Elkhart County 4-H Fair we have several contests in the Home and Family Arts Department which I encourage you to enter and I

Shallow, frequent sprinkling is discouraged because it is wasteful, encourages shallow rooting, mid is ineffective. A good, soaking would be defined as an inch to 15 inches in one application. Most farmers, with their massive field irrigation systems have learned this concept over the years. In feet, farm irrigation equipment is really not designed to water frequently. It may take four to six days to make a complete pass over some fields.
