Support, from front but we are honoring those that have fallen." Street department employee Steve Hoffer, Wakaursa, also gave a donation saying that last year was tire first time he had donated. "I iust thought it would be a good thing to do," he answered, when asked why he did so. Blood donations are said to slump during the summer when many donors are out of their day-to-day routines, and because high school and college-age donors give up to 20 percent of the total supply of blood collected through the Red Cross. Summer travel and activities can also result in accidents that require immediate and intensive medical care and a person with severe injuries from an accident may need from 40 to 100 pints of blood. Type O negative blood is always in high demand because it can be transfused to patients with any blood type and Red Cross officials say supplies are at critically low levels at this time. Renee Klein, clerk-secretary for the Nappanee Police Department, also gave literally of herself and said that during the local drive, several teachers had also donated. Maxwell Heckathorn, whose father is the Nappanee Asst. Chief of the EMS (and a paramedic) said this was his second year working as a volunteer for the local drive. "Last year I did this for my Eagle Scout project," he said. "Last year we had 34 units." Due to the generosity of Nappanee locals, by 2 pan., this year's blood drive had collected 31 units with three hours left to collect.
