Let the Madness begin
I'm a football guy, first and foremost, but the excitement and productivityzapping power of March, Madness pulls me in like die Death Star's tractor beam. Even though talent drain to the NBA robs college basketball of much of its identity, there is no denying the NCAA Tournament's place in the sporting landscape. The Super Bowl, complete with its commercialized silliness, ffljjhf%e*flfif country's biggest event, but March Madness is a close second. This year's tournament features four teams from Indiana, and even with its flagship program in Bloomington floundering, it has been a great season for college basketball in the Hoosier State. Expectations were high at Notre Dame, and so far, the Irish have lived up to their promise. Ben Hansbrough, Hm Abromaitis and Carleton Scott have been tremendous in combining for 45 points per game and an 83 percent rate at the foul line. Notre Dame finished second in the toughest conference in the country, which got a recordshattering 11 teams into the NCAA Tournament. The conference tourney loss to Louisville could've gone either way, now, it's up to the Irish redeem themselves following last year's one-and-done against Old Dominion, and

get hot when it matters most. Before the season began, Purdue was dealt a devastating blow with the loss of All-Big Ten 1 performer Robbie Hummel to his second tom ACL in eight months. The Boilermakers shook it off, started 15-1 and finished second in-conference. In-state products JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore are as good as any 1-2 punch in the nation, but the lack of a third option could limit Purdue’s tourney chances. The Boilers enter the tournament losers of two straight, but should reach a Sweet 16 matchup with Notre Dame, where a lot more than state bragging rights would be on the line. At Butler, the Bulldogs were never going to be what they were last season, not without Gordon Hayward. Butler struggled through a Horizon League slate which it swept a year ago, but won its last nine while taking the conference tournament title. If they can get past Old Dominion in the first round, a meeting with top-seeded Pittsburgh awaits. It would be an on-paper mis-

match, like the ones Butler has won many times in the past. Indiana State provided this year's in-state shocker. The typically dreadful Sycamores finished third in the Missouri Valley Conference before rolling to its tourney title and an automatic bid. They'll get pasted by Syracuse, but for first-year coach Greg Lansing, getting ISU to the Big Dance for the first time since 2001 is a monumental achievement. Other teams which didn't make the NCAA Tournament also had good seasons. Ball State notched four more wins than last year to finish 19-13. Valparaiso won 23 games, tied for the Horizon League championship and was selected to play in the Collegelnsider.com Tournament. And, perhaps the most incredible story was at Evansville, where Marty Simmons led the Aces to a win over Butler and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational, after the once massive coach lost 135 pounds. It's hard to be more inspirational than that. And so, now it begins an 18-day odyssey of hoops hysteria in which "working from home" will be e-mailed or text messaged to bosses a couple million times, and where bracket sheets will be discarded in disgust and cherished like a van Gogh. Enjoy the ride.
