Wakanisa students enjoy fitness festival
By Amy Wenger Correspondent WAKARUSA At Wakarusa Elementary School, the chorus of "Game On!" continues to resonate just as enthusiastically as it has since the very first day of school. The students and staff are carrying on with their year-long mission to promote fitness and well-being, the school recently was treated to a lively day of activities sponsored by Health Works and underwritten by Kohl's. Wakarusa Elementary was among 30 Indiana elementary and middle schools chosen to receive grants prior to the start of the 2010-11 school year, money which in turn helped to implement "Game On! The Ultimate Wellness Challenge." Each of the schools takes the opportunity to share with the students such activttiAJKßßßzitiQn.tasting events and physSOßp work-' shops at various intervals throughout the year. The appearance by Health Works, dubbed the "Fit Feastival," was one such offering. "The program is funded through Kohl's, and while they've done parts of this program in other schools and agencies, they haven't put the whole thing together in one place," Wakarusa Elementary guidance counselor Eileen Bormann said. "I contacted them for information about the program, and during the conversation, one thing Ted to another, and they felt like our school would be the perfect place to pilot trying to put the whole thing together, since we've done a lot with the grant already in nutrition. "We were thrilled, since it meets our goals for education about the food pyramid and goal setting for the November Challenge." The day began with a school-wide assembly, during which students were given a humorous yet thought-provoking insight on such topics as the food pyramid, the various food groups, making healthy choices and the importance of exercise. Later ill the afternoon, the staff and students were dazzled by a carnival-style atmosphere in the gymnasium. Each of the grade levels took turns visiting different booths and participating in nutritionally themed games, such as the "Calcium Cow Milking Contest," "Protein Fish Fling," "Hydration Station," "Conk the Junk Food" and "Jumbo Jam Basketball/Hula Hoops." A "ringmaster" kept things moving swiftly
