‘Care & Share’ Benefit Auction a success
This year's Nappanee Annual Care and Share Benefit Auction was a great success, according to event chairman Penny Huffer. "People have been asking how the auction went, and our committee wanted to make sure all revenue and expenses were accounted for before we went public with the results," Huffer said. "We couldn't be happier with the final tally." The , volunteer group Caring Citizens of the Greater Nappanee Area was in charge of this year's auction. Auction, food and monetary donations revenue was $16,377.52, and minus expenses, resulted in a $15,236.67 balance. In addition to the auction, attendees were asked to bring non-perishable groceries to help fill two local food banks Family Christian Development Center and Open Door. In all, more than 10,000 pounds of food was collected. One twist added this year was to involve the area Amish Parochial schools. Each school was asked to collect groceries, and the groceries were then weighed to see which school collected the most. According to Huffer, 9,403 pounds of food was collected from the participating schools. Family Christian Development Center and Open Door each received $4,500 plus half of the collected groceries, and the Amish Parochial Opportunity schools received $5,500. The $736.67 balance was put in a retained earnings account to help kick off next year's auction. "We were shocked when the winning school weighejd in over one ton of grpr ceries," Huffer exclaimel. "The students and teachers all participated, and they are to be commended." The winning school received a factory tour of Quality Hardwoods and Kountry Wood Products, and the students and teachers enjoyed lunch, provided by McDonalds. In addition, every school student and teacher at all participating schools received an ice cream treat for their efforts. Huffer noted that all expenses for the event were offset by monetary donations. She also said most of the food was donated, that the Amish community stepped up to help serve food and local retailers in Nappanee donated auction items for both the live auction and the bid boards. Huffer concluded, "It was truly amazing how both the Amish and non-Amish
