Panthers maul Zebras in sectional opener

By Steve Sutler Correspondent NAPPANEE Junior running back Coy Brown continued his amazing season by rushing for 157 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while the Black Crunch defense came within 50 seconds of a shutout as the North Wood Panthers dominated the Rochester Zebras 34-7 in the opening round of Class 3A sectional play. The game was not even as close as the score indicated, as the Panthers began substituting liberally early in the third period and the lone Zebra TD came in the final minute against a gritty crew of North Wood JV players, many of whom did not play much on defense in the regular JV season. The Panthers (5-5) won in the first round for the 26th consecutive season, and get a chance to avenge a 24-0 opening game loss to the Jimtown Jimmies (8-2), no throttled Tippecanoe Vauey 54-0 in their opening-round sectional game. Although Rochester sported a 7-2 record coming into the game, it came against the inferior competition of the mostly Class IA/2A Three Rivers Conference and it showed right from the very first play as the Panthers, hardened by seven weeks of Northern Lakes Conference play, gave the ball to Brown who ripped off a 31-yard rur to the Zebra 37-yard line. Three plays later, Brown raced 15 yards for a score and after Brendan Widner

tacked on the PAT, North Wood led 7-0 just 1:15 into the game. The game then got "defensive" for foe rest of the quarter, as each team was forced to punt and North Wood then turned the ball over at midfield on a fumble by Brown. Rochester mounted a short drive to foe Panther 25 but a pass into the end zone by Zebra quarterback Cahner Thompson was tipped twice and finally intercepted by North Wood sophomore safety Dylan Risser, his fourth pick of the season. Taking over at its own 3-yard line, North Wood then put together its most impressive drive of the season, going 97 yards in 18 plays (all but one of them runs) and eating eight minutes off foe clock. Brown carried 1 yard for foe TD land Widner's PAT made it 14-0 Panthers with 7:10 remaining in the half. Another quick three-and-out by the Zebra offense gave (he ball back to North Wood with just over 5 minutes remaining in the half and the Panthers capitalized, driving 62 yards in nine plays for another score, this one on a 2-yard run by quarterback Zac Coleman to give North Wood a 21-0 halftime advantage. The Panthers quickly moved 26

yards in six plays with Brown taking it foe final 9 yards for his third score of foe night. A bad snap on foe PAT attempt resulted in a wild scramble for foe football which ended in a scary fashion when Rochester senior Chad Miller was injured on foe play and had to be taken from foe field on a stretcher. After a 15-minute delay while the ambulance crew cared for Miller (who reportedly suffered a neck injury but was seen to be moving both his arms and legs), things went from bad to worse for foe Zebras as they fumbled foe snap on the next play and North Wood defensive lineman Cory Snyder came up with foe loose ball. Brown promptly ripped off a 29yard run for his fourth score of the night and just like that, North Wood led 34-0 with just over 3 minutes gone in foe second half. At that point, Panther head coach Scott Hoover began substituting liberally on both offense and defense but foe result was much foe same as foe Black Crunch forced a Zebra punt and freshman quarterback Will Kirkwood then marched his charges to foe Rochester 8yard line before foe Zebras held and took over on downs. Most of the damage on the drive was done by junior Andrew Hahn who picked up 54 yards in his first sustained varsity action of the year. The Zebras then drove deep into North Wood territory as foe fourth quarter began, but on fourth-and-goal from the 5, Panther
