Oct 8,1890 The Nappanee Dramatic Go. which is composed of 16 good looking young ladies, played to a crowded house last Wednesday evening at Vogelis Hall. The ladies did exceedingly well in drawing a large audience. John Wisler of Union Twp. died Oct 1, Med 89 years, 10 months, and 4 days. Bom in Bucks County, PA he wed Miss Sophia Stauffer on May 4, 1824. They moved to Elkhart County in 1849 and Union Township has always been his home. 100 Years Ago Oct 12,1910 The first annual reunion of the Pfeiffer Family was held at the home of George Pfeiffer 3 1/2 miles Northwest of Nappanee on Sunday, October 9th, with 43 present. 75 Years Ago Oct 10,1935 People of Nappanee were shocked Sunday evening when word was received of the death of Charles Mutschler at St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend, where he had undergone an operation earlier in the week. Mr. Mutschler and Miss Della Coppes were married in 1901 and she survives with 2 children, Mrs. R. (Helen) Chapman and Mrs. Fred (Isabel) Wambaugh of Elkhart, and 5 grandchildren. He came to Nappanee in 1896. All business houses in Nappanee will be closed Wednesday afternoon during funeral services at the First Presbyterian Church. 4 ■ ~ - 50 Years Ago Oct 13,1960 The 1959 Agriculture Census conducted in Elkhart last fall counted 2,166 farms and total lands in farms was 234,575 acres with average farm size of 108.2 acres. Average farm value (land and buildings) was $32,638. Average farmers age was 48.5 years. County history conies alive at Gathering at Five Medals Elkhart County Parks invites the public to step back in time at the second annual Gathering at Five Medals, a reenactment about the history of the Midwest from the 1660 s to 1815. The event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 24, at River Preserve County Park next to Benton Elementary School on County Road 31, Elkhart. More than 200 re-enactors will travel from seven Midwestern states to participate. Scheduled programs include fur traders visiting a Potawatomi village, matchlock and rifle firing demonstration, and cannon firing by costumed War of 1812 soldiers. Historic craft demonstrations, costumed interpreters, and visits to the re-enactors' camps will be ongoing. The' re-enactment location will be near the site of Chief Five Medals Village from the 1760 s to 1828. Five Medals was a prominent figure in negotiations between the Elkhart River Band of the Potawatomi and United States government. He signed the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 after the defeat of the Western Confederacy of Indian Nations in the Ohio Indian Wars. The village was destroyed in 1912 and 1913 by U.S. military, but the community was abandoned during both campaigns. Small groups of the Five Medals Band lived in Elkhart County until 1828. The Woodland Indian village at the re-enactment will pay tribute to the Elkhart River Band by showing examples of clothing, food, housing, and crafts practiced by the Potawatomi. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children. Advance tickets may be purchased at the Elkhart County Parks administration office, 211 W. Lincoln Ave., Goshen, and also at the gate at the time of the event.
