North Wood rushed for 259 yards on the night, led by a season- and career-high 209 from Brown on 22 carriers. Coleman added 42 yards on 16 totes. Through the air, Coleman was 10 of 20 for 104 yards and a touchdown, but threw three costly interceptions. The relentless Taylor Anglemyer led the defense, as usual, with 10 tackles including a sack, while Roberts picked up seven tackles. White, Lucio Chumas, and Kenny Knigga all had five tackles and a sack apiece for the Panthers. For Memorial, Tyran Hansborough led the way on the ground with 79 yards on 20 carries. Mills was an efficient 11 for 17 passing for 128 yards and a touchdown, with eight of the passes going to Johnson for a total of 92 yards and a score all in the first half. North Wood plays its final regular-season home game Friday against Warsaw (1-6, 1-4 NLC) in a battle that will likely determine the conference cellar-dweller for 2010. JV Update The Panther JV football team continued its impressive late-season surge, blanking Elkhart Memorial 16-0 for its third consecutive win and second straight shutout. Following a Braden Troxel interception, Andrew Hahn ran 5 yards for a score and Will Kirkwood ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Panthers an 8-0 lead after one quarter. Hahn then tossed a 19-yard second-period TD pass to Nick Graber on a tricky halfback option play, and offensive lineman Tyler Holdeman was the unlikely hero on the PAT run as he recovered Kirkwood's fumble in the end zone for two points to make it 16-0 North Wood. Troxel added a second pick later in the game to lead the Panthers defense, which has given up just seven points in its last 12 quarters. • ELKHART MEMORIAL 24, NORTHWOOD 21 At Andrews Field, Nappanee Sente by quarters Elkhart Memorial: 024 0 0 North Wood: 014 7 0 Scoring summary EM - Dustin Mills 2 run (Tommy Kendall kick) EM - David Garcia 4 run (Kendall kick) NW - Tanner Roberts 10 pass from Zac Coleman (Brendan Widner kick) NW - Coy Brown .36 run (Widner kick) EM - Todd Johnson 29 pass from Mills (Kendall kick) EM - Kendall 27 yd. Shively Honored for Service to Football Program North Wood teacher/coach Steve Shively was honored for his long-time service to the North Wood Panther football program with a plaque and a presentation before the Panthers' home opener against Concord Sept. 3. Shively, a 1975 graduate of North Wood, wore No. 52 for the Panthers and was the center on the 1974 state runner-up team. After graduating from Ball State University, Shively joined the Wa-Nee family in 1988 when he was approached by former North Wood industrial tech teacher Cal Stutsman, who was retiring and thought Shively would be an ideal candidate to take his place. Shively coached seventh-grade football at North Wood Middle School from 1988 through 2009, recording 104 wins while never deviating from his philosophy of teaching fundamentals and making sure everyone on the team got to play. He recalled that taking his son Brady to practice with him starting in 1992 and eventually coaching him in 2000 were the highlights of his coaching career. Shively will continue to teach industrial tech at North Wood High School and remains involved with the football program by serving as the spotter for PA announcer Brian Carter at home varsity football games. The Advance News joins the entire Wa-Nee community in thanking coach Shively for his many years of service to the football program.
