Turnovers doom Panthers in loss to Memorial
It Sieve Smua NAPPANEE Despite outgaining Elkhart Memorial 361 yards to 217 and picking up 16 first downs to Memorial's 10, the North Wood Panthers could not overcome five costly turnovers and fell to the Chargers 24-21 on homecoming night at Andrews Field. The loss spoiled a career night for North Wood junior running back Coy Brown, who rushed for 209 yards and two touchdowns in a spectacular combination of speed and power running. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-5 on the season (1-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference) and puts the local squad in the uncomfortable position of having to win its last two games and then advance to the sectional championship to avoid the first losing football season since 1972. As usual, the first quarter was a defensive struggle with both teams trading punts and each picking up an interception on the first four combined possessions. North Wood's pick came from senior safety Jon Christofeno while Memorial's was turned in by senior Brad Poertner. After a 46-vard punt bv Charger Tommy Kendall pinned the Panthers deep in their own territory, North Wood made their second turnover of the night when Brown fumbled at the Panther 13-yard line. Five plays later, on the first play of what turned out to be a

wild and woolly second quarter. Memorial quarterback Dustin Mills sneaked across the goal line from 2 yards out and Kendall's PAT kick made it 7-0 Chargers. The turnover bug bit North Wood again on its next possession as a Zac Coleman pass bounced off the helmet of Brown and into the hands of Memorial's Jeremy Kelly who rumbled 40 yards Ore other way before Neal Brown dragged him down at die Panther 4-yard line. Fullback David Garcia bulled in from there on the next play and just like that. Memorial had a 14-0 lead. To their credit, the Panthers did not roll over and die as Thayne White returned the kickoff 25 yards to the North Wood 35 and Brown then ripped off a 41-yard run to place the ball at the Memorial 24-yard line. Three plays later, Coleman found Tanner Roberts open in the end zone and Brendan Widner's PAT kick narrowed the Memorial lead to 14-7 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The North Wood defense forced a quick three-and-out and the Panthers took over at their own 36-vard line. A pass interference penalty and a 10-yard run by Coleman set North Wood up at the Memorial 36 and after two incomplete passes, Brown burst up the middle and shed several tacklers on a thunderous jaunt to pay dirt for his first TD of the evening. Widner tacked on the PAT and the game was

tied with four minutes remaining in the half. The action was far from over, however, as the Chargers answered right back by marching 75 yards in just five plays, with most of the damage coming on two passes from Mills to speedy wide receiver Todd Johnson, the last a 29-yarder for a Memorial touchdown to make it 21-14 Chargers. North Wood then made another crucial turnover as Coleman was picked off by Collin Holdread who returned the interception 25 yards to the Panthers 16 with 1:24 left in the half.

The Black Crunch defense stiffened and did not allow a touchdown, but Kendall was able to knock home a 27-vard field goal to give the Chargers a 24-14 lead at the half. North Wood then surprised everyone with a popup, onside kick to start the second half and it was executed to perfection by Widner and sophomore Albert Gongwer, who came up with the loose pigskin. The Panthers capitalized on their good fortune, quickly moving 35 yards for a score with Brown taking it the final 19 to make it 24-21

his own 14-yard line. The Chargers managed to pick up two first downs but were finally forced to punt; however, at that point, less than 40 seconds remained in the game. North Wood managed to move the ball into Charger territory thanks to two completions from Coleman to Aaron Rhoade, but with 0.3 seconds remaining, a desperation multiplelateral play reminiscent of the famous Cal-Stanford game ended in a loss of yards for the Panthers and a victory in the game for Memorial.
