Internet, no small task. Krull said the library has enrolled in the American Association for State and Local History standards and excellence program as part of its mission to reach the top level in preservation. It is a tool which can also be used to attain grants for use in the preservation program locally. "I'm so excited," Krull said of the opportunity to honor Culp, "a woman who had the wherewithal to understand the importance of preservation." Members of the Thursday Club, a woman's literary and social group that is observing its 110th year of continuous meeting, participated in the evening's remembrance, too. The Thursday Club, in 1916, had the idea of including a historical room in Nappanee's future library to be built. Evelyn Culp, a 1928 Nappanee High School graduate and 1932 Manchester College graduate who earned her bachelor's degree in history, went on to achieve a master's degree in library science from the University of Michigan in 1934. She joined the Thursday Club in 1941 and gave her first book review, a prelude of what was to

come from the remarkable woman. She was 47 and the mother of four when she became director of the Nappanee Public Library in 1957. She served in that capacity for 20 years, then another 11 years as a trustee. She began asking for historical items of local interest to display in the library and, by 1971, the historical collection was displayed for the first time in the library's Historical Room. Just three years later, Culp established the Heritage Center as Nappanee celebrated its centennial year.

The Heritage Center was renamed in her honor in 1989 and, in 2007, the collection moved to Nappanee Center. Culp had a natural flair for drama and was well known not only for her book reviews, but most especially for her historical programs in which she, almost literally, became the historical figure about whom she would impart information to her audiences. The "black velvet dress," now a legend and undoubtedly Culp's signature piece of stage dressing, was donated by her husband, Fred Culp, along with the gown, ostrich feather fan and beaded jacket to the Heritage Center in 2004. And, although it was most certainly Evelyn Culp's night, Fred was not to be forgotten. A Nappanee firefighter for many years, he was lauded by his son, Steve Culp, as the man who made

Evelyn's vision take shape, the only one who could have "instituted" all of her plans and ideas. Mayor Thompson, too, reminded the guests of Fred Culp's many years as a Nappanee firefighter and business man. Family members told heart-warming stories of Evelyn Culp, too, noting with love that her personal eccentricities were not so surprising in a woman "so brilliant." Thompson, in issuing his proclamation, said it wouldn't be necessary to repeat the process next year because Sept. 30 would be "Evelyn Culp Day for the ages from now on on this day for as long as we are all alive." Daughter Jeanie Culp Dudley also expressed gratitude from the Culp family, and added, "I'm hoping she's giving all those book reviews up in heaven now."
