Help support our military troops Nappanee American Legion Ladies Auxiliary is again collecting names and addresses of local service men and women who are serving our country. Any area resident with a relative, neighbor or friend in the military who would enjoy local support is asked to take the information to the American Legion post or to email it to wandas6 @bnin.net. Over the last few years, the auxiliary has sent about 40 "care" packages to those serving overseas, and also has communicated often with those serving stateside. The auxiliary said recipients have expressed enjoyment in receiving the tokens of cai£/' and notes that items to be shipped to service men and women are always welcome. Dog park meeting scheduled If you're interested, an informational meeting regarding a community dog park is slated at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, in Council Chambers at the Nappanee Municipal Center, 300 W. Lincoln St. The ~meetu\f U being held to determine if there is public interest in a dog park and to establish a committee to further explore the idea. If you are unable to attend, but would like to be involved or desire more information, contact Tiffany at 574-773-2122. Red Regiment plans chili tailgate The North Wood High School's Red Regiment will sponsor its 13th annual Chili Support at the school from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 8. It's $6 for all you can eat, and children 5 and under are free. Building family traditions is theme Edie Sutton, Purdue Extension educator in consumer and family sciences for St. Joseph County, will teach a free "Building Lasting Family Traditions" class at 1 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in the conference room of the Purdue Extension Elkhart County office, Elkhart County Fairgrounds, 17746 County Road 34, Goshen. Wakarusa honors Businesses of the Year
By Amy W*ng«* Correspondent GVC Mortgage was named Small Business of Ate Year as die Wakarusa community gathered to celebrate another year of accomplishments in business, education and civic dedication Sept. 20. The dinner and awards event was sponsored by the Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce, and featured guest speakers and accolades for many. The ceremony at Nelson's Banquet Hall in Wakarusa recognized the achievements of several local businesses, along with one outstanding Wa-Nee educator, and an individual deemed a loyal "Friend of the Chamber." Several representatives from the Chamber served as presenters throughout the night, and awards were given to the following persons and entities that were chosen as exemplary in local commerce as well as leaders of their community. Deb Shively, Chamber executive secretary, presented GVC Mortgage with the Small Business of the Year award. Longtime Wakarusa resident Tim Weldy is the principal manager and certified mortgage loan originator for the enterprise, and has been involved in this line of work for 12 years. Weldy's wife, Ruth, is Weldy's high school sweetheart; both are graduates of North Wood High School. They are the parents of two daughters, Sarah,
