Students observe ‘National Anthem Day’
By Amy Wenger Correspondent Students at Wakarusa Elementary School showed their spirit of renewed patriotism the morning of Sept. 14, as the entire school participated in commemorating "National Anthem Day." It was on that date nearly 200 years ago that Francis Scott Key composed the lyrics to "The Star Spangled Banner." The students spent several days preparing for Tuesday's event by learning the origins of the song that was to become our national anthem. And the lessons learned culminated into a celebration of patriotic sortgs, set against autumn sunshine at a ceremony on the grounds of the school. Wakarusa Elementary music teacher Shawn Skaggs opened with compelling remarks. She said, "I feel it is important to observe this day so children learn the words and history of our National Anthem, which they hear sung at events around them, on television, and so forth. Learning why this song represents our country helps them think about something much bigger than themselves, and understand why we have what we have today and what price has been paid for our freedom." "The Star Spangled Banner" was written by Key on Sept. 14, 1814, as Key was being held captive offshore from his homeland of Baltimore, Md. As devastating occurrences transpired before his eyes, Key scrawled the lyrics to the song on the back of an envelope, all the while awaiting word

Wakarusa Elementary School students, teachers, staff, and assembled visitors joined together in the Pledge of Allegiance once the flag was raised.
as to whether his beloved city was being overtaken by the British. Skaggs also explained that a recent poll revealed that many adult Americans were never given the chance to leam the words to our national anthem. "Music educators all over the nation have made it a goal to teach our youth the melody, words, history, and proper behaviors to exhibit while singing or hearing the national anthem of the USA,". she noted. At one point during the commentary, an invitation was extended to the audience, allowing those who had served in the military to come forward and be recognized. Two men strode up the sidewalk to stand near the flag, and as they walked, they were welcomed with a long round of applause. One arrived in full military attire. The American flag was raised as the crowd reverently watched. Hands were then raised over hearts before a traditional recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Three fifthgrade students were chosen to share opening remarks prior to the singing. Words of inspiration were shared by Annelise Wingard, Alana Hemley, and Luke Holland.

Skaggs directed the chorus of several hundred students and staff members through a trio of songs, including "This Land Is Your Land," "God Bless America," and "The Star Spangled Banner." She was assisted by first-grade teacher Mindi Martin. Several fifth-grade students were also featured performers, including Brad Delio, Jemima Robinson, and Khalan Hostetler as soloists on "This Land Is Your Land." Joey Yaw and Drew Flickinger launched the singing on "God Bless America," and Jared Hoffman and Kory Kern headed up "The Star Spangled Banner." As the festivities ended, the students were given one last opportunity to demonstrate their pride for America, with a rousing chant of "USA! U5A!...," a sound which resonated grandly towards the spectacular morning sky.
