CITY OBSERVES LABOR DAY CLOSURE The city of Nappanee Common Council will meet in regular session Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Nappanee Municipal Center, 300 West Lincoln St. This meeting has been rescheduled due to the Labor Day holiday. Additionally, the council has rescheduled its regularly scheduled Oct. 4 meeting to Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at the same location. VENISON WORKSHOP PLANNED SEPT. 10 Purdue Extension Service, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Fish & Wildlife, is sponsoring a venison workshop. A deer will be skinned, butchered, and prepared in a variety of ways. Other topics include a discussion of food safety and handling procedures, as well as an update on deer health issues. The program will be Friday, Sept. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Elkhart Conservation Club, 55515 Riviera Drive, Elkhart. There is a sls fee at the door. Reservations are requested by calling the Purdue Extension office at 574-533-0554. 'NIGHT OWLS' BOOK DISCUSSION A new book discussion group is forming at Bremen Public Library. The "Night Owls" will meet from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month in the lower level meeting room. The first discussion will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, focusing on the book, "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein. German Township residents are invited to register by calling the library at 574-546-2849 or by visiting the adult desk on the upper level. Please register by Sept. 20. RIVER BASIN GROUP MEETS OCT. 5 The St. Joseph River Basin Commissipn's quarterly meeting will be at 10 a.m., Oct. 5, in Room 104 of die Elkhart County Administration Building, 117 N. Abdut 1,500 fans attended the concert in which North Wood's choir received SI,OOO for the school in the 'Save The Music' program promoted by Foreigner and VH-1. Jeff Cramer, choir director, said following the performance, "The kids have not stopped talking about it Foreigner has created a new young generation of fans. It will be one of my favorite memories of my time as North Wood's Choir director.'
Heritage Center celebrates founder
In August of 1957, Evelyn Lehman Culp became head librarian at the Nappanee Public Library. Her appointment marked the beginning of a long and valuable association with the library and Hie community. ** “ Among Culp's many accomplishments during her 30 years of service was the establishment of the Heritage Center in 1974, which was housed in the lower level of the Library and named for its founder in 1989. The Nappanee Public Library will celebrate what would have been Evelyn's 100th birthday with a special display in the current Heritage

Schools win with Keyßank donations
Keyßank is awarding New Burlington Amish School with $250 after it received the most votes during the August city-wide contest Receiving $125 each are Nappanee Elementary and Woodview Elementary schools. Fifteen Amish schools and five WaNee School System schools received a total of 183 votes, according to Ron Bedward, Second Saturdays director. . . The tie for second prize was a surprise to organizers when Nappanee Elementary and Woodview Elementary each garnered 39 votes. Bedward said the ballots were recounted twice, just to make sure the count

The collection features the historic John Hartman House, Hoosier Cabinets, school and military jqpmorabilia, a Famous Cartoonists Showca#, a Blue Ribbon Art Gallery, and stories of Nappanee native sons and daughters. On display through Oct. 16 will be Evelyn's famous black velvet court gown and jacket,

Captain’s Tailgate Cookout is Sept. 3

The North Wood Captain's Club will have its annual Tailgate Cookout from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3, before the Concord versus North Wood football game. The cookout will take place in the upper deck of the Pit at North Wood High School. Tickets for tire event are $6 and can be purchased from any North Wood athlete or from the Athletic Office. PRESCRIPTION DRUG DISPOSAL DAYS SET Nappanee Police Department, Nappanee Neighborhood Watch, and Elkhart County TRIAD will host Prescription Drug Disposal Days from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, and from 8 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 24. Take unused or expired medications to be safely disposed of to the Nappanee Police Dept., 301 W. Lincoln St. during those hours. Authorities remind resident to never flush, bum or throw away unused or expired medications, as they may harm the environment or fall into the wrong hands. For more information, call 574-773-4111.
