Rare Studebaker auction to help disabled people
A 1960 Studebaker Lark and some one-of-a kind Amish quilts will share the platform at an auction to benefit people with disabilities Saturday, Aug. 28, at the Shipshewana Antique Auction Bam. MDC Goldenrod, an Elkhart County non-profit, will host the auction. Tom Bontreger, of MDC Goldenrod's board of directors donated the car. "I have a special interest in helping people with disabilities," said Bontreger, "so I'm very nappy mat we have had a lot of calls about the Studebaker." MDC Goldenrodprovides homes, training, and medical care for more than 75 people with developmental disabilities. "My daughter-in-law's grandfather bought the car when he worked as an engineer for Studebaker," Bontreger explained. "He took good care of it and I think he would like toe idea that it's going to help such a great cause." MDC Goldenrod is a ministry of more than 30 Goshen area churches. The churches contribute money and volunteer labor. Many of the churches are Amish and Mennonite. Other items tor sale at the auction include Amish handcrafted quilts and furniture such as rockers and blanket chests, plus antiques, porch swings, and outdoor playground equipment. The festivities begin on Friday evening, Aug. 27, the day before the auction. Starting at 4:30 p.m., MDC Goldenrod volunteers will serve a BBQ chicken meal for people who want to preview the auction items. Then on Saturday at 7 a.m., volunteers from area churches will serve an Amish haystack breakfast. The auction itself begins at 9 a.m. and goes until about 2 p.m. or until all the items are sold.
