Speaking up about agriculture is more important today than ever, so Indiana com and soybean farmers are looking to honor five individuals for their outstanding service or contributions to the agricultural industry. Beck's Hybrids of Atlanta, Ind., has teamed up with the Indiana Soybean Alliance (ISA) and the Indiana Com Growers Association (ICGA) and is now accepting nominations for the Beck’s Hybrids Beyond the Fence Awards to honor those whose outstanding work has had a positive effect on agriculture. The awards focus on five areas that honor the best in Indiana agriculture: • Beck's Friend of Agriculture Award An individual who has made a contribution but isn't directly involved in agriculture. • Beck's Agricultural Education Outreach Award An individual who has made a contribution through his/her role in Indiana agriculture education. • Beck's Community Betterment Award A farmer whose - contribution to the cortmWtity has been 9een through philanthropic, service, volunteerism, donations and/or leadership projects. • Beck's Farmer Neighbor and Urban Relations Award A farmer who has made a contribution toward improving neighbor relations. • Beck's Ag Media Award An individual in media who has achieved excellence in reporting about Indiana agriculture. 2010 Horticulture Opm Class exhibits open to all
Are you growing this year's "Champion" Vegetables or "Best of Show" Flowers? Open Class entries can be made by anyone, regardless of age, so if you grew the flowers or vegetables you can enter them. All Michiana residents are invited to participate in the Open Class Horticulture Department at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair in Ag Hall. The entry sections are: Potted Plants-flowering, Potted Plants-foliage, Cactus and Sand or Cactus Dish Gardens, Planter or Dish Garden, Hanging Baskets, Arrangement of Cut Flowers, Cut Flowers, Grains and Hay, Above Ground Vegetables, Below Ground Vegetables, and Miscellaneous. The sections are then subdivided into different classes.

They have force children: Larry (Risa) Reaker, Bremen; Anita (John) Van Meeter of Edwardsburg, Mich.; and Tony Reaker, Bremen; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. After 45 years of married life in Bremen, the Reakers retired to Aubumdale, Fla. Pre-registration is not required. You can register during the two check-in times when you bring your entries. All entries must be in compliance with the Horticulture Department Rules for entries. No late entries will be accepted. Exhibits will be released for pick up from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2. No early releases (unless discarded due to spoilage). A copy of the rules and regulations may be picked up at the Purdue Extension-Eikhart County office, 17746-E CR 34, Goshen, or found on the Elkhart County 4-H website, www.4hfair.org/openclass.htm.
