School immunizations changed INDIANAPOLIS State health officials are reminding parents of school immunization requirements for the 20102011 school year, which include some additional vaccinations. Parents should ensure their children are up-to-date before the start of the next school year. "Diseases like chickenpox, meningitis, and pertussis are not diseases of the past," said Joan Duwve, M.D., medical director for Immunizations at the Indiana State Department of Health. "They are still with us and circulating in Indiana schools." Dr. Duwve reports during the previous six months there have been six confirmed outbreaks of chickenpox at Indiana schools. In addition, there has been an increase in pertussis (whooping cough) activity in the state. Of the 391 reported cases in 2009,174 were among school-aged children (ages 5 tol9).

Panthers pitching canying the load

By Slavs Smua Correspondent WARSAW / GOSHEN / NAPPANEE Although it has been the bats that have carried the North Wood Panthers baseball team for much of the 2010 season, the Panther pitching staff has steadily improved and was the key to victory in two Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) wins over Warsaw (4-2) and Plymouth (3-2). Junior Derek Yoder went the distance cm tite hill against the Tigers, the first North Wood win over Warsaw in recent memory, while classmates Zech Manring and Cory Snyder combined for a six-hitter in the Senior Night victory over the Pilgrims. The Panthers ended up with a split for the week, however, falling 10-1 at Goshen and 6-5 at Culver Military Academy in which solid pitching efforts were undone by fielding miscues. North Wood finished die regular season with a record of 11-12 and opened sectional play May 26 against tournament host Tippecanoe Valley. North Wood 4, Warsaw 2 The rainy weather that has plagued area baseball squads for most of the month of May continued to play havoc with the Panther schedule, with field conditions in Nappanee forcing a regu-larly-scheduled home game with Warsaw on May 18 to be moved to the Tigers home field. The Tigers grabbed the early lead in the top of the first when Joey Flickerson led off with a double, advanced to third on a ground out, and scored on another ground out by James Miglin, but North Wood answered to tie it on base hits by Derek Yoder and Cam Spitaels and a sacrifice fly by Cory Snyder. Yoder and his counterpart, Tiger ace Josh Witt, then proceeded to shut down their opponents' batters for the next three innings, with just two men reaching base for Warsaw and one for the

Panthers. Finally, the Tigers took the lead at 2-1 in tiie bottom of the fifth when Brady Ousley tut his second double of the game and scored on another twobagger by Hickerson. After Yoder got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth without surrendering a run, North Wood responded with yet another remarkable sixthinning rally, sending eight men to the plate against Tiger reliever Miglin and scoring three times to take a 4-2 lead. Yoder got the action started with a base hit and advanoed to second when the Tiger center fielder bobbled the ball. Brennan Yoder then drew a walk that included a wild pitch that sent Derek Yoder to third, and Spitaels then drove him home an a fielder's choice in which a diving Yoder just barely beat the throw to home. Cory Snyder then laid down a bunt that resulted in an error by the Warsaw catcher loading the bases for Blair Beehler who lofted a fly to deep center that fell in for a hit, scoring Brennan Yoder. After a Adder's choice forced Spitaels at the plate, Snyder scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2 Panthers. Goshen 10, North Wood 1 In a game that was a lot closer than the final score indicated, North Wood wasted a quality outing by junior Cole Page and solid relief from Brandon Purcell by committing a season-high five errors that led to eight unearned runs. The Panthers grabbed an early 1-0 advantage when Derek Yoder led off with a double and scored cm an RBI ground out by Spitaels and it stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth, thanks to stellar work on the mound by Page. Finally, the Redskins managed to scratch out a run when Travis Pickard singled with one out, Jon Swihart walked, and Pickard scored on a throwing error on an attempted double play ball, tying the score at 1-all.

Goshen pitcher Taylor Short continued to stymie the Panther bats and in the fifth inning, the Redskins erupted for six runs, five of which were unearned thanks to a pair of North Wood errors that could have limited the damage to a single run. Things got no better in the sixth when a bobbled grounder with two outs allowed Goshen to stay alive, setting tiie table for a three-run homer by Diego Garcia to make it 10-1. North Wood 3, Plymouth 2 In the final home game of the week, North Wood honored seniors Tony Miranda, John Sittlet Cam Spitaels, and Trent Wagner in a pre-game ceremony that was followed by a stellar pitching effort from Manring and Snyder to secure a 3-2 NLC win. All of the scoring for both squads came in tiie opening inning, as tiie Pilgrims got the first two men on thanks to a bunt and a hit batsman and got them home on a single by Damon Howe and a sacrifice fly from Kyle Cartwright. North Wood came storming back in its half of tiie first which began with a solo home run by Derek Yoder to left-center field, his team-leading seventh dinger of the season. Brennan Yoder followed with a single but was erased on a double play. Snyder then reached on an error that should have ended the inning and sophomore Tanner Roberts followed with a shot down flue left-field line that just cleared the fence for a two-run homer, the first of his young career, to make it 32 Northwood. Manring, who had vowed that he would do whatever it took to get the seniors a win in their final home game, then methodically shut down the Pilgrims for tiie next four innings, allowing several baserunners but calmly pitching his way out of trouble by inducing ground out after ground out.
