North Wood competitive at 3-way meet
By James Costello Sports Editor PLYMOUTH Maybe it was just being back home or maybe it was the fact that it was Senior Night Whatever the case, Plymouth's girls put up a number of personal bests, beating North Wood 85-47 and losing to Concord by just eight points without top Lady Pilgrims runner Haley Smart in a split at a three-way Northern Lakes Conference meet at home Wednesday. "Our kids, I was disappointed in what we did last week, I was disappointed the week before. I didn't think we had any fire in us, and we had some fire tonight," said Plymouth girls trade head coach Paul Patrick. "I don’t know if it's being at home. You - motivate them a little tut it's their last home meet, it's the senior's last chance to run here—but really I think the whole team responded." "Concord's a better team than us, so for us to be within 70-62, you know we're four points up and four points down to a tie, and that's the way we look at it," he added. It's a four-point meet without Haley." While North Wood finished out the meet at the bottom of the heap, head coach Brooke Tobias was proud of foe way ha athletes compded at foe triangular: Tm really proud of my team and
how they handled the competition in our conference because our conference is a ripe conference,” she said. They've done a stellar job for me, and I'm proud of them." North Wood was led by a core of strong distance runners as foe Lady Panthers claimed top honors with a 10:20.9 at Plymouth. The squad already owns foe school's 4xßoo relay record at 10:06, and Tobias believes it can break foe 10-minute barrier but with its closest competition trailing by 23 seconds it wasn't to be Wednesday. It's just diligence on their part," Tobias said. "They have a goal in mind, and they set out to do it, and they do it together every time. That's how practice works, and that's how their mind-set is. ft's just a direct link between foe two." Sophomore Cynthia Medina is on the cusp of breaking another North Wood distance record, and she earned first place in both the mile and two-mile races at Plymouth with respective times of 5:44.9 and 1231.1. Medina's personal best in the mile is roughly six seconds off the current school record, set by Tobias herself-in 1998. "I really want it to be lower," said Tobias. It's not a very fast time in comparison to foe conference. It's obtainable for Medina." Medina was followed doaely in the 3200 race by teammate Undse£j||| who clocked a 1236.4 as the Panthers

went one-two in the event. Sisters Sarah and Lyndsay Smeltzer both broke personal records in the high jump by a full four inches, as Lyndsay cleared 4'lo, and Sarah won foe event with a 5-1 clearance. "My high jumper Sarah Smeltzer, amazing performance tonight," Tobias said. "She has cleared 5 foot so she jumped up, that was significant. She's been practicing really hard. She's out at foe track until 5:30 every night." • CONCORD 78. NORTHWOOD 54; CONCORD 70. PLYMOUTH 62; PLYMOUTH 85, NORTHWOOD 47 At Plymouth 3200 reUy; I. North Wood 10:20.9. 2. Concord 10:43.7, 3.
