Traffic stop yields suspects wanted by Secret Service ELKHART A routine traffic stop May 3by Elkhart County I.C.E. officers led to the arrest of two subjects wanted by the U.S. Secret Service for bank fraud. The Elkhart County Interdiction and Covert Enforcement Team (1.C.E.) had been working on the Indiana Toll Road in Elkhart County at the time. Indiana State Police Senior Trooper Mick Dockery and his K-9 partner, Hondo, who are currently assigned to the I.C.E. team, stopped the suspects for speeding near the 92-mile marker in Elkhart. Dockery had Hondo conduct an exterior sniff of the silver 2000 Mercedes Benz. Hondo made a positive alert on the vehicle, and later alerted on the center console in the car where officers located more than $1,300 in cash. A records check of both the driver and passenger showed they had federal warrants issued for their arrest for bank fraud. The driver, Marius Casian, 36, of Lafayette, La., and passenger lon Preda, 22, Hollywood, Fla., were both placed under arrest and being held in the Elkhart County Jail. A phone call to the Secret Service revealed they had been looking for the suspects for some time and that the subjects were suspected in several bank fraud cases along the East Coast. The traffic stop also helped identify one of the subjects for whom authorities had only a photo but no name.

Local Charities Benefit DAT photo The Nappanee recently presented checks for $560 to three local charities from the proceeds of the Dodgeball tournament held last month. Those three groups were: Nappanee's Family Christian Development Center, Nappanee Boys & Girls Club, and the Open Door. Receiving the checks from Rotary President, Jeremy Van Lue (right) are Karen Sherer Stoltzfus (FCDC), Holly Yoder (B&G Club) and Hank Whelan of Open Door. Also the day has finally come! The dedication of the Rotary Centennial Restroom project was Wednesday, May 12 at 7 pm. The location of the restroom is on County Road 7 just south of McCormick Creek Golf Course entrance. This was the original site for the Culp School, where a log cabin was built in the early 1850. Twenty years later a brick school was constructed and was attended by students until the consolidation of the township schools in 1952. A plaque noting the Culp School’s origins was donated by the former students, is located next to the Rotary International plaque.
