Church plans May Play Day Community Church of Waterford, 65154 County Road 21, Goshen, is planning May Play Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 15, at the church, come rain or shine. Games, prizes, food and other activities will be part of the fun and will include homemade apple dumplings, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Free popcorn also will be available. Kids activities will include pony rides, balloon shaving, games and more. The public is invited. VB fundraiser May 15 North Wood High School will sponsor a volleyball fundraiser Saturday, May 15, at the school with starting time dependent on the turnout of teams. Organizers are looking for men and women ages .16 and older for teams to compete in pool play ‘-matches of two games rally scoring to 25 points. Top teams will advance to the tourney. Cost is S6O per team and checks may be made payable to NorthWood High School Athletic Department. Four honored for historic contributions
By Merrie Chapman Correspondent NAPPANEE —Four local residents were honored, by the Nappanee Historic Preservation Commission, for their contributions to promoting the historical significance of the community. The Historic Preservation Commission held its annual awards night, May 6, inside the historic Nappanee Center. Three local residents were onhand to accept their awards. Family members accepted the "Friend of the Commission Award" given to the late Judy Ann Evans. Bob and Shirley Adams were awarded the "Downtown Rehabilitation Award" for improvements made to the Nappanee Movie Theatre, located one block north of downtown

Owner Dan Mast moved to the area a little more than two years ago, opening Grand Slam Outdoors shop, a retail sporting goods store, in 2008, he told well-wish-ers. Nappanee. In recent years the couple has worked to replace the facade and marquee at tiie at the theatre, and update lighting. Tom Evans and Michelle Matsey accepted the "Friend of the Commission Award" for wife and mother Judy Ann fvans who died in an auto incident in late December 2009. She had served the Commission since 2003. Evans served as president of the commission from 2005 until 2007. Dennis Martin, owner of Martin's Hardware, was awarded the "Property Preservation Award" for keeping the historical look and feel of his business. The "Neighborhood Preservation Award" went to Amanda Graber for historical upkeep of what is known as the "Ralph Moore Property."

Memorial Week tribute planned National Law Enforcement Memorial Week, held annually in May, is to pay tribute to the local, state and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect citizens with courage and dedication.

Nappanee Police Department will host a special program at 5 p.m., May 14, in front of police headquarters, 301 W. Lincoln St., for the public to honor law enforcement officers. Sgt. Brad Balasa, the department's K-9 handler, will be the keynote speaker. Nappanee Mayor Larry Thompson and Nappanee Police Chaplain Darrel Flaming also will participate. The Goshen Police Department Honor Guard will assist with flag ceremonies, as well. Let's all be there to let our officers know we support them as they protect us daily ...
