Panthers rally for split with West Noble

By Styve Srma Correspondent After a 17-day layoff due to spring break and a cancellation by Fairfield, die North Wood Panthers baseball team looked very rusty in the opener of a doubleheader against West Noble, committing five errors in fire field behind a pitching staff that allowed six walks and hit three batsmen, ultimately falling to the Chargers 11-9. North Wood bounced back in the nightcap, however, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break open a pitcher's duel and earn a 62 win for the doubleheader split. The Panthers are now 4-2 on the young season, heading into the conference opener against Concord on April 19. West Noble 11, North Wood 9 - Game 1 With a chill wind blowing out of the north to put a damper on an otherwise sunny day, West Noble got on the board first with three runs in tire top of the first inning, collecting two hits, three walks, and a hit batsman off Panther starter Cole Page. North Wood answered with a run in the bottom of the first when Derek Yoder led off with a double and scored on a bases-loaded walk to John Sittler to make it 3-1 Chargers, but after loading the bases on a walk, an error, and another hit batsman, Page was lifted for junior Zech Manring who promptly struck out West Noble's Jake Rupright for the first out. The next batter, catcher Korey Kendall, smacked a triple into the gap in left-center, clearing the bases. Kendall scored on a sacrifice fly two batters later and the Chargers had a 7-1 advantage after just an inning and a half. North Wood picked up another run in the second on an RBI single by Cam Spitaels and added two more in the third on a double by Tony Miranda, an RBI double by Trent Wagner, and another bases-loaded walk to Yoder, narrowing the margin to 7-4 Chargers. Meanwhile, Manring settled into a nice groove for North Wood, allowing just one run in the next three innings, while reliever Dirk Ormsby did the same for West Noble. In the top of the sixth, the Chargers pushed across another run and had the bases loaded with two outs when Manring induced a popup that should have ended the inning, but it was dropped, scoring two more Chargers and increasing their lead to 11-4. The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a third bases-loaded walk, this one to Blair Beeler (scoring Yoder) and Sittler then plated Brennan Yoder with a sacrifice fly to make it 11-6. After reliever Brandon Purcell pitched a scoreless seventh, North Wood rallied for three more runs off the third Charger pitcher, Mitchell Knepper, with the big blow being a two-run homer by Derek Yoder, his third hit of the game. Knepper bore down, however, and got the final two outs, preserving the 11-9 Charger win. Derek Yoder and Spitaels each had three hits for North Wood and Yoder scored four runs and knocked in three. Knepper had three hits and three RBIs to lead West Noble, while Kendall added three RBIs. North Wood 6, West Noble 2 - Game 2

DAT photo North Wood's Derek Yoder (15) drives a pitch from West Noble's Jake Rupright over the right-field fence for a two-run homer in the Panthers’ 6-2 win over the Chargers in the second game of a doubleheader. The blast was one of five hits on the day for Yoder, who is batting an incredible .824 in the pre-conference portion of the season.

The second game of the day between the Panthers and the Chargers was a pitcher's duel, featuring North Wood's Corey Snyder against a pair of West Noble hurlers, Derric Caskey and Adam Robinson. North Wood scored first when Derek Yoder led off the game with a triple and scored on an RBI single by Brennan Yoder, and it stayed at 1-0 until the top of the third when the Chargers tied it on a double by Robinson and a single by Kyle Halderman. North Wood quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Beehler walked, advanced to second on a single by Sittler, and scored on a double by Snyder, making it 2-1 Panthers. West Noble tied it with an unearned run in the top of the sixth when Halderman walked and scored on an error, and further damage was prevented when Derek Yoder made a fabulous diving catch in center field with two men aboard to end the inning. The Panthers then dealt the fatal blow to the third West Noble pitcher, Rupright, in their half of the sixth, scoring four times to take a 6-2 lead. Wagner got the action started by leading off with a walk. Snyder sacrificed pinch runner Tanner Roberts to second and after back-to-back walks to Kyle Heckaman and Derek Yoder, Brennan Yoder knocked in Roberts and Heckaman with his fourth single of the

doubled, plated a run and crossed the dish twice, while Lindsey Biller and Allison Schrock both singled twice, with Biller adding two RBI and a run scored. Also for the Panthers, Emily Shay singled and knocked in two runs, and Tess Anglemyer added a single, RBI, and two runs scored. North Wood pitcher Courtney BeMiller limited the Lancers to two hits to pick up her third win of the season.
