Eighth grade Panthers capture Big 11 title
WAKARUSA —The North Wood Middle School eighth grade boys basketball team put an exclamation point on their Big 11 Tournament run, winning the title Saturday, Jan. 16, turning back a determined Penn Discovery team 37-35. North Wood took a 21-14 halftime lead, but the Archers fought back in the third quarter, closing the precarious Panther lead to one at the end of the third. North Wood never gave up the lead, though Discovery tied the game late in the fourth quarter. The Panthers remained calm under the intense pressure, making all four of their foul shots to help seal the win. North Wood took a five point lead with a little over a minute to play but Discovery quickly cut it back to one. With the raucous crowd now on their feet for the final minute, North Wood forged ahead by two, 37-35. Discovery then had one last chance to tie or win, but could not get their final shot to fall. North Wood controlled the rebound and ran out the clock. As the clock struck zero, the Panther students stormed the floor in a wild celebration with their fellow classmates. The Big 11 Tourney win by the Panthers is the first since the school joined the conference in the early 2000 s. Three of North Wood's four tourney wins came against three of the top five teams in the conference, all played on the road.
