Trophy Woodworking
An unlikely moment to reconnect occurred after Christmas. My husband had previously phoned a former parishioner. He sought to purchase another Shaker wooden box - to complete my nested set. But midst a hectic holiday season, Christmas morning, with an "oops" in his voice, my husband simply shared with me that I would have a little longer wait for one additional gift. A few days later we headed together to the home of a lovely retired couple. After welcoming us, conversation ensued on God's amazing goodness, wholeness and restoration. And we learned the rest of their story.' Sometime last summer, this couple had traveled east to visit family. One i -ArrtV rtl iwrfm-.,i 'iimtrfii'n

Newness in the Dailyness Yvonne Riege Columnist
1 night, upon opening a doorway thought to lead into the bathroom, our friend tumbled down a flight of concrete stairs and landed in the basement. An ambulance ride, broken bones, punctured lung, surgeries, tense moments, rehabilitation and lengthy nursing home care spanned over five months. Sheer guts and determination —along with die prayers of many propelled the healing process. Eventually this couple returned home, but therapy continued. An experienced therapist decided t)

cies of working with his hands would take precedence over any other type of occupational therapy. Thus he began regaining his unique skills to do woodworking. We learned that my gift was actually his very first completed woodworking project since the accident. My eyes misted, as I truly felt unworthy to receive such a treasured accomplishment. Although a part of me wanted to insist on his keeping this as a winner's trophy of all he had been through, I also saw it as a symbol of hope. He is now able to return to the art he dearly loves. By God's grace, he will continue crafting beautiful pieces. May this story be an inspiration. Hold on to your dreams during 2010.
