Volunteer Robyne Hakes wraps gifts during Christmas Jubilee, Dec. 12.
FCDC director thanks annual Christmas Jubilee volunteers
By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE - With numerous families in the WaNee area still unemployed, making the holidays special has been an increasing challenge for many parents. More than 100 local volunteers lent a hand for this year's event, which served a record 197 families for a total of 606 children. While the jubilee culminates in December, it actually begins weeks before when volunteers place Toys for Tots containers throughout the Wa-Nee community. Shoppers have the option to purchase new toys to place in the boxes, then volunteers collect the items and take them to the Boys & Girls Club of Nappanee facility, where they sort them into age group categories. Donors also give blankets, coats, hats and scarves and other non-toy items. This year's event took place Dec. 12. While they waited their turn to shop, parents enjoyed a variety of donated refreshments. Volunteers then assisted the parents in their shopping, ran the registration table, wrapped gifts, carried items out to cars and handed out fruits and cookies that a local church congregation had donated.
