‘Cats’ to prowl into Round Barn for holiday season NAPPANEE The artisans and carpenters who built Frank Aker's round bam in 1911 could never have imagined that the structure would be moved 12 miles 80 years later to become The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres. Since its dedication in 1992, it remains a bam in many wavs and is known to have housed mice, deer, singing birds and bats on stage. So having a clutter of Cats on stage for the holidays seems wholly appropriate. For those cats to be created bv Andrew Llovd Webber from the book of whimsical poems published in "Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats" written in 1939 bv T:S. Eliot is an unprecedented collaboration. Eliot used the assumed name "Old Possum" to write the series of poems in letters to his godchildren. The poems explored the feline psychology and sociology of the world's oldest domesticated pets. Remains of house cats have been found in Egypt dating back 9,000 years. The personalities of Old Gumbie, Growltiger, Turn Turn Tugger, Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer are revealed through Eliot's words and Llovd Webber's music. Grizabella the Glamour Cat came from an unpublished poem because Eliot thought she was too sad to be included in the book. Director Trevor Nunn included her in the musical and she becomes the star of the show through the voice of Betty Buckley, who won the Torn Award for outstanding achievement in the theatre. Her signature song "Memory" has been recorded by over 150 artists, including Barrv Manilow and Barbra Streisand. "Cats" received nearlv every theatre award Broadway and Llovd Webber's own West End in London have to give. It became the longest-running Broadwav show in history until it was overtaken bv his own "The Phantom of the Opera." "Because of the complexity of the show," said managing director of the theatre Laurie Schotz, "the demand for nearly continuous, often acrobatic dancing and singing, casting the production has been an intensive recruitment process with auditions in Memphis, St. Louis and Charlotte, N.C. Few regional theatres have the resources to produce 'Cats.' W'e are fortunate to have a dedicated and talented artistic and technical staff to bring this ambitious project to reality." The show will be directed and choreographed by Brvan Wlas, who directed this summer's hit production of "Oklahoma!" He is the resident choreographer and an adjunct dance instructor for The Renaissance Center in Tennessee. Nathan Brown, who music directed "Oklahoma!" with Wlas, teams up for "Cat'-." "Among the challenges for the cast," said Wlas, "includes distinctive and detailed makeup for each character, taking up to an hour before each performance." There are 68 performances scheduled between Nov. 4 and Dec. 31. The New Year's final performance is part of a celebration package that includes dinner, reception, cabaret, fireworks and lodging. Four of the performances are one-hour Theatre for Young Audience versions designed for area schools. They are Wednesday mornings, Nov. 11 and 18 and Dec. 2 and 9. Study guides are provided to the attending school class's teachers before hand to help enrich the experience for students. "Meet The Characters" theme buffets will take place Nov. 20 and Dec. 20. Breakfast with Santa Dec. 12 will include "Cats" elves.as his helpers. Regular Friday night white table cloth theme buffets in The Barn Loft Grill are scheduled for Nov. 13 and Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Each performance of "Cats" will end with the cast in their winter mittens, scarves and stocking caps for the curtain call and bring snow and Christmas carols to the festive audiences. New subscribers by Nov. 30 will receive "Cats" tickets for limited dates. Reservations and more information is available at 574-773-4188.

After the Bremen Fair received a brilliant writeup in papers this week, Nappanee now wants a fairground and that place is doing all it can to encourage the project. The businessmen of Nappanee have signed an article of agreement to close their business houses at 8 p.m. 100 Years Ago Oct. 20, 1909 Saturday morning Sheriff Ziesel and his Goshen officers swooped down on Nappanee in a hunt for a "blind tiger" and searched the McLaughlin place, formerly a saloon and now operated as a "soft drink" parlor. They found and confiscated two barrels partially filed with pint bottles of beer from Indianapolis Brewing Co., some wine and a gallon of whiskey in quart bottles.„There is indication that authorities are starting to make Elkhart County "dry" in fact. 75 Years Ago Oct. 11, 1934 Wednesday may prove to be a day long remembered in Nappanee, as it was the day the. last penny was paid in to officers of State Bank of Nappanee on subscriptions for stock and surplus in the new bank. The name "Farmers & Traders" bank will become "State Bank of Nappanee" after $60,000 worth of stock and surplus is sold. It will be wonderful to be able to say in next week's paper that "the Bank is open!" 50 Years Ago (Date not provided) Five days are left in a hot campaign as Democrat J. Maxwell Clouse runs for reelection against Republican Cecil Stalnaker for mayor next Tuesday. Clouse is running, charging the Republicans are a "do-nothing" party and Republicans counter that they put in place the appropriation he administers for City betterment. 25 Years Ago Oct. 17,1984 Photo caption: Guess what just happened? The North Wood Panthers have topped cluster opponent Whitko 37-12 and won the cluster 34 crowm. 15 Years Ago Oct. 19, 1994 Tri-Kappa will host its annual fall festival Nov. 5, 6 p.m. to midnight, at Amish Acres, Nappanee.
