goods, gifts and more from local businesses and individuals. The bid board works much like a silent auction. The price of admission is one bag of non-perishible grocery items to be donated to the Family Christian Development Center and Open Door food pantries. The auction will also help local parochial opportunity schools and to help market the Nappanee community. Last year's Care and Share Benefit Auction coincided with the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 18, 2007 tornado that left a wake of destruction through much of Nappanee. Funds raised went toward a number of promotionals, including a series of TV commercials letting the area know Nappanee is "still in business." This year's event comes in the wake of what has come to be known as the "economic tornado," which wrought its own devastating effect on Elkhart

"It was just unbelievable the amount of people that showed up to help," Hoffman said. The entire week was a celebration of sorts, with a ballhpn release the first day in honor of Lengacher and Brown, followed by five

days of community effort. Sunday, Oct. 10, a special dedication ceremony took place, and the playground officially opened. Project Playground began in May. Town officials decided from the beginning that they wanted it to be a true community effort from start to finish, so they met with elementary-age children for input. "We met with all the school children and asked them if they could design the perfect playground, what would they want," Hoffman said. "It's their playground, it’s our playground. We made this. It's built by them, designed by them." Ideas straight from the children's heads include a panther slide and a tree house, among many other unique features, making the 8,000 square-foot playground truly one-of-a-kind. serves as a focal point for the playground and as a reminder to the community that the playground truly belongs to them. "We hope this is a lasting memory for those who helped, and that you can do amazing things when you are working for the same goal," Hoffman said. "This community certainly proved that." Despite its significance, the playground remains without a hame. "We never found anything that we felt encompassed everything we wanted to say," Hoffman said, "So we decided to leave it unnamed for the time being. It's always been the downtown park and it'll remain our downtown park." respected and renowned for her work with children, particularly as the founder of The Compass, a youth ministry housed just blocks from the school. Over the past few months, the townspeople have been raising funds to create Project Playground, built entirely on the efforts and talents of volunteers and funded entirely through donations. The new park, which was designed using ideas contributed by local children, stands on Wabash Street, where the former town park was located. Construction began Oct. 6 and continued throughout the remainder of the week, culminating in a public unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony Sunday, Oct. 11 at noon.
