Death notices Jerotd “Jerry" Siebeit Aug. 12, 2009 ELKHART Jerold "Jerry" Siebert, 60, of Elkhart died the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 12 at home. He is survived by two brothers: Jim (Joan) Siebert of Wakarusa and Dennis (Diane) Siebert of Three Rivers, Mich, and a sister, Vicki (James) Siebert of Canton, Ohio. There was no visitation or services. Cremation took place. The ThompsonLengacher & Yoder Funeral Home handled arrangements. For years these two towns have been at daggers' points to each other and the enmity at times has been elevated to a position as to render it unsafe for either Bremen or Nappanee people to tread upon their respective neighbors' A’alks. Slowly this hatred is being cast aside and the young people are once more becoming intimate friends and enjoying friendly visits. 100 Years Ago Aug. 25, 1909] The first reunion of the Hepler family was held last Saturday at the home of Jacob Hepler 4 miles southwest of Nappanee with over 300 present (the next largest family in this part of the state) exceeded perhaps by the Stump family. Guest from a distance came from Terre Haute, Chicago, South Bend and Michigan. Officers elected were Emanuel Hepler, Etna Green, President; Daniel Hepler, Nappanee, Secretary; Jacob Hepler, Nappanee, Treasurer; and Edward Hepler, Nappanee, Historian. 75 Years Ago Aug. 23, 1934 A homecoming of pupils of Mrs. Cora Stuckman will be held Tuesday evening, Aug. 28 at Nappanee Community Park for all who took instruction from her to gather at a potluck dinner at the pavilion and enjoy a musical program. The Dunnikcs have moved to North Liberty, where he will teach and coach junior high. Joy Maxine McDonald Aug. 14, 2009 On August 14, 2009, at 9:09 p.m., Joy Maxine McDonald arrived at her final destination in the loving arms of her Savior. She passed away in the home of her daughter, Susan Scrogham, at 352 N. Elm Street, Nappanee. She was born July 22, 1926, the youngest of nine, to Robert Wright and Bessie Myrtle (Pence) Larimer in Goshen. She grew up on the family farm northeast of Millersburg and graduated from Millersburg High School in 1944. After high school she graduated from South Bend Business College and was a personal secretary to the Penn brothers who were owners of Penn Controls prior to it becoming Johnson Controls. On May 25, 1947, she married John Ned McDonald of Elkhart in St. John's Lutheran Church and they purchased a farm where they truly had a variety of animals. She was involved in 4-H, Home Extension Club, Bible Study Fellowship, Professional Business Women, Altrusa Club, Teens Involved, and First Baptist Church of Goshen. She was a Public Accountant for 36 years with an office in her home, a

WAKARUSA—The Wakarusa Historical Society will host an Ice Cream Social at the Wakarusa Historical Museums on South Wabash Avenue in Wakarusa Sunday, Sept. 20 from 3 to 5 p.m. with refreshments for sale. Every refreshment purchased earns a ticket for drawings to be held throughout the concert. Now a Wakarusa resident, she also owns King Gyros in Mishawaka, which she has operated for 15 years. While her husband grew up in the area, she is originally from Chicago but likes the small town atmosphere. "It s so hometown and small," she said. In 1974 she fulfilled her lifelong dream of singing on the Grand Old Gospel Time Show of the Grand Ole Oprv in Nashville. In addition to that she sang at the Elkhart County Fair, Kosciusko County Fair, Renfro Valley, Ky, and the Oklahoma Opry. She recorded six albums in Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton's studio and gave musical programs across the U S. and Canada. The motto of her life was "What you are is God's gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God." She loved to collect lighthouses because she believed that Jesus was her lighthouse from the rocks of sin and to travel visiting the 48 continental
in a climate controlled building. Kline said she is willing to raffle a quilt using panels that were hand-cross stitched by her late husband Jay to raise money for the cause. The quilt was pieced by Dan and Barb Duesler and hand quilted during the Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival. Quilt raffle tickets are $5 each or three for $lO. The quilt drawing will take place at the end of the event and those entered do not need to be present to win. "gyro" is actually Greek. A gyro, Weldy said, consists of about 9G 1 percent beef and 10 percent lamb on Pita bread. It seems to be gaining in local popularity as more and more people give it a try. "Lunches are great," Weldy said, "Everybody loves it, loves,the taste." The Panther Pit officially opened Thursday, July 16. Hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sundays. While Weldy is there throughout that time, she hopes to someday be able to hire a few more employees to help share the workload. *

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ned on Jan. 25, 2008; her son, John Robert; a grandson, Beau Lahrman; great-grandson, Matthew Scrogham; six brothers, Hallie, Luther, Daniel, Harry "Bart," Robert "Berlin" and Oliver; and two sisters, Neva "Grace" DeFord and LuCinda "Sinnie" Reed. Visitation was 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 16 at YoderCulp Funeral Home. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17 at First Baptist Church, Goshen. Pastor Gregg Lanzen officiated. Burial followed in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Memorial contributions may be given to First Baptist Church Goshen Youth Ministry or Care at Home with Goshen General Hospital.
