Amish Acres Round Barn Theatre presents ‘habit-forming’ performance
NAPPANEE "Nunsense II," the sequel to the international hit "Nunsense," exploded onto the Joseph Stein Stage at the Round Bam Theatre last Tuesday, April 14. "Nunsense II" picks up six weeks after the Sisters staged their first benefit concert to bury four dead sisters whom their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, had mistakenly poisoned with a bad batch of Vichyssoise soup. The Sisters are back in the gymatorium of the Mount Saint Helen's school presenting a "Thank You" show for all of the patrons who have supported them in the past. Things get off to a rousing start, but before long, in true "Nunsense" form, chaos erupts. Two Franciscans show up to claim Sister Mary Amnesia as their own. At the same time the nuns hear that a talent scout is in the audience to see them

fore, provides a perfect networking opportunity. Truex hopes to form an advisory board of around 20 Nappanee residents who can work closely with the students to bring about Nappanee's "green revolution." The board is already underway, and has had a series of preliminary meetings, all of which he feels have gone very well. "Nappanee is so receptive," he said. Outside the coffee shop, the students hope to be able to sit down to dinner with local families and connect with local business owners like McCormick Motors, which is already in the process of installing solar panels and has implemented a number of energy- and money-saving business practices. Truex has also learned of another local business that wants to find ways to turn its wood by-products into something reusable. Truex hopes to participate in Nappanee's annual Embrace the Pace Days, and to host a special "green summit" sometime in July featuring a number of speakers discussing the money-saving qualities of a "green" lifestyle. Picnics and door-to-door surveys could also be in the works. "The purpose as I see this project
strut their stuff. Book, music and lyric writer is Dan Goggin. The score includes "Nunsense Is The Magic Word, "What Would Elvis Do?" and the rousing finale, "There's Only Way To End Your Prayers And That's To Say Amen." "Nunsense II" will bring laughs to audiences of all faiths. The cast includes Round Barn Theatre alumni Karen Courliss as Sister Mary Leo, Jackie Wolter as Sister Robert Anne and Crystal Day VanArtsdalen as the Reverend Mother. They will be joined by Crystal Davidson as Sister Amnesia and Cheyenne Nelson as Sister Mary Hubert, making their Round Barn Theatre debut. This outrageous musical is directed, choreographed and lit by Round Bam Theatre Artistic
is to have people in the/communitv aware of the changes that are coming," Redevelopment Executive Director Larry Andrews said, "changes that we're going to have to make and to see the implications if we don't make some of the changes." Andrews hopes the project will serve as a teaching tool to educate residents on the savings associated with a "green" lifestyle. "Now 1 think the time has come because of the economic situation, the oil situation ... we're going to have to make changes." At the end of the summer, the students plan to have enough information to measure Nappanee's "carbon footprint," or overall impact on the environment, then map the community and leave behind a "Climate Action Plan" for lowering that footprint within the next five to 10 years. "Carbon, I feel, is the key measuring tool for the future," Truex said. "Agricultural land in the new carbon counting is going to be the most valuable." Meanwhile, Truex has already identified where Nappanee is well on its way .to being a "green" city. He was also quick to point out the traditional

lifestyle practices of the local Amish population. Buggies and bicycles, the main mode of transportation among the Amish, are emissions-free, he said. In addition, Amish homes do not consume nearly the energy resources that their more modern neighbors do. Overall, the students will be in Nappanee for 2,000 hours and on campus at Ball State for 4,000 hours working on this project. Many of them are able to count it as an internship. Truex said he recruited the students based on their interest and the applicability of the project. Much of the inspiration for the project came from a book Truex read titled "Hot, Flat and Crowded." Truex is also one of five Ball State faculty members to receive the 2009-2010 Virginia B. Ball Center for Creative Inquiry fellowship, allowing recipients to design and teach their dream course. He initially hoped to examine three small Indiana towns, but due to limitations had to narrow it to one. Truex, Andrews and the students invite the community to learn more about the project at www.aGreenerNappanee.org. 1
