ADVANCE NEWS PHOTO/MANDY MCFARLAND Karate instructor James Hitchcock teaches a class for ages 7 and older at the Boys & Girts Club of Nappanee facility. Pictured are (left to right) Amanda Falk, Ethan Cooper, Jacob Hapner and Hitchcock. KICKING, continued from front page
"We usually discourage anyone under 7," he said. This is mainly a safety precaution, to decrease the likelihood of injury. Hitchcock first became interested in karate about 25 years ago when he was working for Yamaha. He studied under Nikoraki Sakuma, who came from Hamamatsu, Japan. The two of them eventually teamed up to open a school to teach karate. "When he left to go back to Japan he left me in charge of the one school we had at that time," he said. They now have three schools and operate under the name "Michiana Wado Kai Karate Association," of which Hitchcock is both chair and head instructor. Wado Kai is just one of numerous different types of karate, Hitchcock explained. It is not widely taught in the U.S., though it is one of the more popular styles in Japan. Hitchcock has studied a variety of different karate styles. "It’s interesting to study different styles," he said. One thing Hitchcock emphasizes in his students is hard work. There are four belt levels aside from black belt, including white, red, green and brown. "The students here earn their belt," Hitchcock said, emphasizing the word "earn." Unfortunately, Hitchcock said, there are a number of instructors who simply allow students to pass through the different levels without actually learning what they need to know. "I have a saying: there's no bad styles of karate, but there's probably bad instructors," he said. There is no set period of time for a

mood of the role can be a challenge. "Sometimes after you travel a bunch, you kind of want to relax a bit," Shaw said. "But you have to keep up the intensity of this role." One of the characteristics of "Jesus Christ Superstar" is the fact that it is entirely sung. This has provided a much-welcome challenge for Shaw as a singer. "For me, I prefer it," he said. "I don't know if the term would be easier (than a speaking role); I'm naturally a singer more than an actor. For me it's preferable." In past productions, Shaw has had other roles that were entirely singing, including the part of Jdseph in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat." "I'm a tenor, so I naturally want to sing stuff that's high on my register," he said. "I enjoy the aspect of it. I get to show off a bit of range." Shaw's travels with .the company have taken him all over the country and, just a week ago, very close to

home when the show made a one-night appearance at the Morris Performing Arts Center in South Bend. However, though he enjoys his role Shaw looks forward to the day when he can return to Nappanee and stay for a while. "I went home for Christmas break," he said, "Other than that I haven't been home." More about Shaw Shaw has performed in front of an audience since he was young, and has earned an ever-growing list of honors and accolades. In 2003, he won the first WSBT Channel 22 Star Search competition. Since then he has performed with Tsung Yeh and the South Bend Symphony, competed in the Hollywood round during American Idol season four and made the fop 100 contestants. He attended Azuza PacificUniversity in Los Angeles, Calif., where he was the featured tenor in the schools's choir. He graduated in 2007

student to advance through the different belt levels. That, Hitchcock said, depends on the individual. Some may take four years wTtile others may earn their black belt in one and a half to two years. It took Hitchcock about three years to earn his black belt. "I feel fortunate that we've been able to carry on the tradition," he said. "And we try to teach traditional Japanese karate." Over the years Hitchcock has watched many of his students follow in his footsteps, becoming instructors as well. In fact two of his first students to earn black belts are now teaching at the two other affiliated schools, which are in South Haven, Mich, and Grand Rapids, Mich. Ethan Cooper, a homeschooled highschool junior from Nappanee, has earned his black belt and has worked as Hitchcock's assistant Jot about three years. "I've always been interested in this kind of stuff," he said. A friend told Cooper about the class about five years ago, when it was still taught at Borkholder Dutch Village. Cooper has enjoyed it ever since. "It's been a lot of fun," he said. Cooper's main role is to help the students improve and to correct them if they get something wrong. Cooper's older brother, David, is also part of the class and has a brown belt. When Hitchcock is not teaching his class, he enjoys teaching seminars and workshops on things like nerve strikes and pressure points. Those interested in learning more about the class can call Hitchcock at 773-5399 or e-mail [email protected].
