GUIDANCE continued from front page "We chose topics that we think will be most helpful. Some of our group members have been asked by community members, 'Where do I get help with utility bills? How do I keep food on the table for my family? How can 1 keep ray house?' We hope that our presenters will be able to help our community members answer these types of questions." To clarify, the event is not just for those who are currently unemployed, but for anvone seeking information on available resources. "Even those who are not personally affected yet by the economy, I know that many hearts from the community are aching and praying for those who are struggling," member Mary Dale said. One major discussion among academy members was fear and self-consciousness. They understand that there may be those who are unwilling or afraid to let others know they are struggling. Another facet of the event is to assure them that they are not alone. Member Jeff Stueve, who is also the executive director of the Family Christian Development Center, has seen how difficult it can sometimes be to admit one's problems. "For someone struggling financially, I would encourage them not to run from the challenge, but to see what financial options are available," he said. "I would also encourage them to keep or build a social support network." "For most people in our area this may be their first encounter with being unemployed for a long period of time," Birky said. "It is one thing to be shut down for a couple of weeks and know that you will have a job again soon. It is a whole new experience to not know when you will be employed again." There will also be three special 30-minute presentations on choice topics that the group felt would need expanded upon. These will take place in the cafeteria, just down the hall from the gym. Following each session, speakers will hold question and answer times. Arepresentativefrom the Learning Generation Initiative at 9:15 to discuss continuing education. At 10:15 a.m. representatives from the Elkhart County Purdue Extension office will discuss "Living on a Budget." At 11:15 a.m. the final speaker, a representative from Lake City Bank, will discuss various financial issues. While the tough times continue, Academy members echo everyone's hopes that the community will overcome. "The Wa-Nee community is strong and faithful and will continue to support members of our community in the best way we know how; through giving and prayer," Dale said. About the academy The Nappanee Leadership Academy, sponsored by the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce and Nappanee Public Library and partnering with the Goshen Leadership Academy, is dedicated to training individuals to be leaders within their community. • For more information visit www.nappaneeleaders.org.

NWHS students show their talent
By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE Hard work and talent have paid off as 15 North Wood High School students received nigh honors in this year's Scholastic Awards competition. Of them, 14 received art awards and one received an English award. Josiah Telschow received a gold key for a clay pencil portrait on black paper. The assignment had been to portray a face that was segmented in some way. Telschow's drawing was segmented into six parts, each portraying tension in some way. For example, the mouth is open and yelling, while the forehead has a large crack. "It hits the subject right there," Telschow said. Receiving the gold key has fulfilled one of Telschow's longtime goals and has helped him follow in the footsteps of his older brother, who won multiple gold key awards in high school. "In our family, artistic ability runs in the family," he said. "And to get something of this caliber in my art, it's very special. It's kind of an affirmation of skill and knowing my art was good enough not just by my standards but by someone else's standards." Junior Ali Lechllitner received honorable mention for a colored pencil, dissected self-portrait. Rather than literally disconnecting portions of her subject, she used different streaks of light and flowing patterns, which she described as "almost psych-adellic-looking." Lechlitner's portrait was actually drawn from a photo that she had taken of herself. She had put it on the computer and was playing with different effects and patterns, which gave her

the inspiration she needed to create her drawing. Gabe Avitia won both a gold key and a silver key. His gold-key piece was a black and white drawing of three cheetahs in a nighttime scene. His silver-key piece owas a portrait of a friend, half color and half black-and-white. "I think black and white is what I really like to do, and cheetahs are my favorite animals," Avitia said of his first-place work. "I thought it would be a challenge to do all three cheetahs." For his portrait, Avitia wanted to branch away from' strictly black and white, and so added color to half of the face. Gold key winner Tanya Hershberger also entered a dissected portrait. Her's was in colored pencil and was a

She felt the leaf shape would be an appropriate way to portray this. "I really enjoyed it," she said. "It was fun."
