SURVIVAL continued form front page Meanwhile, her mom had been trying to get home when her vehicle became trapped between two trees. What followed is an experience Nichole strongly feels was supernatural. A gentleman came, seemingly from nowhere and removed the trees, freeing the car. Then, he seemed to disappear. The strange thing, Nichole said, was the bright flash of light that seemed to descend prior to his appearance and ascend after he had drug the tree away. The days that followed seemed just as surreal to the hundreds now without homes. Pam Juarez was the first in that area to receive a new home, just before Christmas. "Not many towns have done what we've done here," she said. "Thank goodness for the spirit of this town. I firmly believe it's the faith that's pulled this town together." After the disaster, the neighbors felt a kinship that only survivors of some major disaster can know. "It brings us a lot closer because sometimes we kind of forget," Karen Reilly said. "You're in your own busy little world." Johnson has lived in Nappanee since 1975. "I've never seen a community like this," he said. Pat Reilly would agree. "I'd like to give Nappanee the credit," he said. "Nappanee, the city, the people that came together, the effort." John Wells, owner of Honkey Tonk Entertainment and a resident of the Jackson Street neighborhood, was able to provide music for the block party straight from his own garage. "A lot of people pitched in (after the tornado)," he said. "Thev helped people they didn't even know. I just feel fortunate to be part of it."
