anyone who understands that love vou have for a child." It is Stillson's love for her children that made the project special to her. "This project wouldn't be if it wasn't for Summer and Cybil," she said. "Mothering is just my ultimate dream, and I put 100 percent into that, so this song just touches me in a way it wouldn't have before I had them." Stillson also realized that using a major publisher could hinder the project because they prefer to assign their own illustrators to picture books. So she decided to self-publish, using Evangel Press of Nappanee to print the books. Not only has the project been special to Stillson, it has been special to the artists who contributed their work. "(The project) came at just the right time," Jessica Flores of Bremen said. "It really hit me because I was at the point with my little girl that every tiny little step she took was a time to rejoice or a time your heart would break: moving her out of her crib or putting away some of the dresses that were your favorite that she'd outgrown. It's about growing up, moving on, letting your child experience new things step by step. I could telate to the early stages of that." Flores is the communications assistant at the Nappanee Public Library. She illustrated the song's chorus: "You cannot close the acorn once the oak begins to grow; and you cannot close your heart to what it fears and needs to know." As a mother, she was able to pour her love for her own child into her art, and use symbols of childhood throughout. "Right away when I heard that line I imagined, hands opening an acorn and like a sapling bursting out of it," she said, "and 1 like to use lots

of curvy elegant lines in my work anyway, so I could see all these delicate inked lines kind of undulating out of that acorn. It's pretty whimsical. Mine has some hidden images that represent different stages of a child's life. There's a fishing pole, a graduate cap, a key that would represent maybe a tirsricar or driving, there's a crayon." Tim F. Hooker learned of the project from the Chicago Artists Coalition Web site. To him? the project meant something a little different. "Mv father passed away when I was 5," he said. "I'm a single person right now. I don't have anv children. My nephews and nieces are all very special to me, and 1 just thought what a special project this would be to participate in." For Hooker, who likes fan-tasy-themed illustrations, the project was a perfect fit. His line went: "I could tell him what to watch for; I could warn him what to fear." His illustration includes a boy in a tree with a dragonlike creature coming out of the sky, representing life's troubles

and fears. Like Flores, he also illustrated part of the chorus: "You cannot close your heart to what it fears and needs to know." To illustrate this, he chose a finger pushing a heart into the ground: "The heart has a face like 'what are you doing to me; 1 need to grow, " Hooker said, "but it was being pressured by this finger (saying), T don't want vou to grow anymore,' like a father saying, 'you're growing too fast, but eventually I ntx.'d to take my finger back and let you bloom and grow as vou need to be."
