North Wood eighth grade boys finish runneHip in big 11

By Steve Sittler Sports Correspondent ELKHART - The North Wood Middle School boys' eighth grade basketball team completed their season on Saturday, Jan. 19, falling 44-39 to West Side Middle School (Elkhart) in the championship game of the Big 11 tournament. The title game, played in venerable North Side Gym, saw the Panthers grab an early 13-11 lead after one period, thanks to seven points from point guard Taylor Anglemeyer. Tony Gates, the "Bearded Wonder" poured in eight points to keep the Wildcats in it. In the second quarter, North Wood went on an 8-1 run to grab a2l -12 lead before West Side finally scored a bucket at about the two minute mark. Panther center Ethan Killian had four points in the rally on two offensive rebound baskets before West Side rallied to trail 23-19 at the break. Killian apparently then took the halftime oration from Coach Bob Bilinski to heart, as the husky sixfooter was a beast on the boards in the third stanza, pouring in seven points, including two baskets and a free throw that resulted from his relentless assault of the offensive glass. The margin going to the final six minutes was seven at 34-27 Panthers, and could have been more had not North Wood gone icecold from the charity stripe, making just 3 of 8 tries in the period. In the fourth quarter, with the Panthers playing conservatively to protect their lead, West Side found unlikely heroes in Sean Nettro and Jyronn Copper. Nettro and Copper, who had combined to score just three points in the opening three periods, suddenly caught fire and combined for 12 points (seven by Nettro and five by Copper) in the final quarter as the Wildcats outscored

the Panthers 17-5 in the final period to claim the title. North Wood finished with a fine record of 13-6 on the year, including the Big 11 run-ner-up finish and a championship of their holiday tournament in Portage, Indiana. Anglemeyer led the Panthers in scoring at 8.3 points per game (ppg), followed closely by Zach Coleman at 7.4 ppg and Brad Yoder at 6.3 ppg.
