Andrews has been impressed with the number of people who have come to the FCDC to help support tornado victims. 'lt's been really a wonderful thing to see," she said. With the large numbers of items brought in during the first days following the tornado, the FCDC asks that donors consider supporting tornado victims financially as
Red Cross to gives ‘hope’ to Nappanee tornado victims
By Mondy McFarland Editor ELKHART By the time Christmas roll around, it will have been two months since Nappanee experienced an F 3 tornado that destroyed part of town and left many without a permanent home for the holidays. While they cannot replace everything, the Elkhart County American Red Cross hopes to bring a little seasonal cheer into the lives of those whose homes were severely damaged or destroyed in the tornado. The organization will include these families in this year's Tree of Hope program, which they normally reserve for Elkhart County families who lose their homes to fires during the months of November and December. "We just felt so sorry for them," director of programming and services Deb Moore said. So far, there are two Elkhart county "fire faPnilies" and approximately 17 Nappanee "tornado families" on the tree. The families contact the Red Cross with their names, ages and gift requests. "We ask that they give us two items of $25 or less that they would like to have that they miss the most," Moore said. According to Moore, many of the listed items are things most people would not even think of missing. "We had one fire family mom say you can't believe the things you miss, like an ordinary can opener," she said.
well. "At this point, we are actually asking for monetary donations because we're learning that people have varied needs and we try to put together what their need is." , Andrews dted several situations, including one family whose teenager lost her glasses in the storm. Another instance includes a mother whose babysitter lost her
While the Red Cross sent out about 33 notices to Nappanee families, it can be difficult to reach them because the notices went to addresses where the houses were destroyed or are unlivable. However, these families can contact the Red Cross until Dec. 14 to have their names placed on the tree, so long as their houses were classified as "major damage" or "destroyed." Because house fires are often spontaneous, the Red Cross will take names of Elkhart County "fire families" until Dec. 24. Those who wish to sponsor a fire or tornado victim can contact the Red Cross any time before Christmas. The organization plans to continue until there are no more names on the tree. In many instances, businesses, churches and other organizations have opted to sponsor entire families. The Red Cross also asks for monetary donations to help offset the cost of wrapping and delivering and to purchase gifts for families in the event of a last-minute disaster. This year's delivery date is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 21. Moore and other Red Cross personnel expressed their gratitude to those who have already chosen to sponsor local tornado or fire victims. "We really appreciate everything everyone's done, and this is one more thing we can do to help those people," she said. The Elkhart County Red Cross is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

ivs4iiriomr Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those suffering losses from the terrible tornado that ripped through our area five weeks ago. We were very fortunate that there was no loss of life. It should really make us thankful for all that we have. As a small gesture of our compassion, we would like to offer an extra 10% off of sale prices that are already marked, to anyone involved in the tornado. Offer ends Dec. 22. home. The FCDC found a licensed daycare center that] will allow the mother to pay what she was paying her sitter while the FCDC makes up for the difference. However, according to Andrews, all of this takes funds. Those who would like more information about donating to the FCDC for tornado victims can call 773-2149.
