STORM, continued homfrant Other residents were not so lucky. Between 200 aiwL2so homes and businesses received damage. Of those, 10D to 150 were destroyed. Despite the devastation, mere was no loss of life, and only five reported injuries, all cute and lacerations from flying glass. Officials attribute this to the fast action of the Nappanre police, fire and EMS in sounding the tornado sirens. Randy Spitaels lost his home, but his family was able to it to their basement before the tornado hit. "We heard the siren and the family headed to the basement," he said. "We felt the sensation of our ears popping, like if you were on an airplane." Spitaels estimates that approximately five minutes lapsed from the time the family heard the sirens to when he emerged from tire basement, but the tornado was only over their house for a moment. "We heard the crashing and tire windows breaking," he said. "The whole incident lasted no longer than 10 seconds n Rural residents had only their TVs and radios to warn them, and Amish residents had no warning. Kevin Yoder and his family did not make it to their basement before tire tornado crossed into their property. "We were in bed " he said. "We made it to tire kitchen." Though tire family was not in the basement, tire worst injury they suffered was a tiny cut on Yoder's thumb. "We believe a higher power is watching over us," he said. The Yoders lost much of their property, including four large outbuildings, seven horses, three cows and more than 30 trees. "We believe one of our buildings went right over our house," Yoder said. Brad and Shelly Thomas lost nearly all of their buildings, but damage to the house was limited to broker windows and roof damage. "We're blessed it spared the house," Shelly said. "Things can be replaced, but lives can't* The destruction was not limited to homes. Most of what was left of New Beginning Assembly of God south of Nappanee was unrecognizable. "We were trying to find the church and my mom noticed tire crosses, and we knew this was tire building," worship leader and children's ministry leader Michelle Meese said. The worst of the damage took place on East Market Street where many businesses were destroyed. The Fairmont and Gulf Stream facilities received heavy damage, including a number of newly finished trailer units ready for shipping that weekend. Other businesses that received severe damage were John's Auto Spa, Marty and Ted's, the Marathon store, Taco Bell and several others. Mayor Larry Thompson commented on tire disaster Friday morning during a press conference at City Hall. "I think we're a resilient community with a lot of volunteers," he said. "We tore down a McDonald's here and re-built it in three months. Something tells me that once we get toegreen light these businesses will bounce back." /'“ZT Despite theheavy structural damage, there'were no deaths and only a few minor injuries. "That in itself is a miracle," Thompson said. For most of Friday, the entrances to Nappanee from U.S. 6 and S.R. 19 were blocked to traffic. City officials asked businesses to remain closed and urged residents to stay home Friday. While 4,000 homes did not have power following the storm, that number decreased to 700 by Friday morning. The Blackstone subdivision was one of tire most severely damaged neighborhoods. Several homes were a total loss- •
