Panthers fall to Memorial in overtime, 28-27
By Steve Sittier Sports Correspondent ELKHART For the second time this season, the North Wood Panthers could not convert a last minute twopoint extra point attempt, and the result was another onepoint loss at 28-27, this time to the host Elkhart Memorial Crimson Chargers in overtime. The Panthers also came up short on a similar try in the final minute against Concord in Week 3, and fell to 2-3 in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) just two plays and six yards from being in the conference driver's seat at 4-1. After a nearly scoreless first period featuring two punts by North Wood and one by the Chargers, Memorial drew first blood by marching 81 yards on 13 plays with tight end Chad Coffey grabbing a nine-yard TD pass from quarterback Scott Sindle to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. After forcing another Panther punt early in the second stanza, Memorial added to their lead when Sindle found Devington Halliburton on a screen pass and the fleet-foot-ed, polysyllabic senior wide receiver took it 60 yards to the house, breaking several tackles along the way. Sophomore Tyler Keck tacked on another extra point and the Chargers were in control at 14-0. Sensing their backs to the wall, North Wood rallied with a 10-play, 65-yard drive of their own, with junior quarterback Skyler Titus taking it the final yard to narrow the Charger lead to 14-7. On the next possession, Panther sophomore linebacker Tony Miranda picked off a Sindle pass near his own 40-yard line and rambled up the right sideline before being forced out of bounds at the Memorial 32. Five plays later, four of them runs by senior Kent Biller, North Wood was in the end zone again with Biller toting the pigskin the final six yards to even the score at 14 all with just 1:06 to play in the half. Unfortunately for the Panthers, Memorial was not content to run out the clock, as Sindle tossed a long pass to Halliburton, who made an incredible diving catch at the North Wood one-yard line with 30 seconds to play in the half. Sindle sneaked the final yard and Memorial took a 2114 lead to the locker room, although not without a bit of drama as the Panthers recovered an onside kick and moved to the Charger 281 where Brandon Williams' 45yard field goal attempt was just wide left as the halftime buzzer sounded. third-down sack of Sindle by the Panthers' Cody Mishler, North Wood marched 55 yards in seven plays, with Biller getting his second TD of the night on a five-yard run to tie the score at 21. On the next series, the Panthers forced another punt, thanks again to a big sack by Mishler, and after four plays including a 24-yard run by Biller and an unbelievable diving 39-yard reception by wide receiver Chaz Bellman, North Wood had a first-and- - goal at the Charger six. However, on the second play from scrimmage, Biller was stripped of the ball by Memorial's Andy Hygema, who returned it to the 25-yard line, with the Chargers getting 15 more yards tacked on after a late hit by North Wood. Memorial could not take any better care of the ball than North Wood, however, as Charger running back Zach Corpe coughed up the ball after a 12-yard reception and Bellman recovered at his own 25-yard line. The fourth quarter then turned into a defensive struggle, with both teams punting twice, and the period ended with the score tied at 21, set; ting up the first overtime game of the year for North Wood. Under IHSAA overtime rules, the ball is placed on the 10-yard line and each team gets four downs to score a touchdown or attempt a field goal. The Panthers won the toss and elected to go on defense first, but the Chargers rose to the challenge, scoring on second down and converting the PAT to take a 28-21 lead. On their possession, Titus found Williams in the right comer of the end zone on third and four, and the junior made a brilliant leaping catch over two defenders to bring North Wood to within one. After a timeout, the Panthers elected to go for two and the win, but a sweep left and a cutback by Biller came up a half-yard short as the Chargers stormed the field to celebrate only their second conference win. As has been the case all season, the sensational Biller led the way for North Wood, piling up 124 hard-earned yards on 24 carries, including two more TD runs. Biller has rushed for more than 100 yards in six straight games, scored at least two touchdowns in five of them, and is among the area leaders in multiple rushing categories with 957 yards on 118 carries (a whopping 8.1 yards-per-carry average) and 12 rushing TDs. Titus added 31 yards on die ground, and junior fullback George Lopez chipped in with 37 yards on just six carries, as the Panthers rushed for a total of 195 yards. - • Through die air, Thus was

just 10 of 22 for 122 yards, but did add another passing TD to his season total of eight. Titus has thrown for more than 100 yards in all but two of North Wood's seven games. Memorial was led by the elusive Corpe, who danced and wiggled his way to 92 yards on 10 carries. Sindle added 43 yards on the ground and two scores, and also threw for two more TDs on his way to a 208yard night through the air. Halliburton grabbed just three passes but made them count for 155 yards and a touchdown, an average of more than 50 yards per catch. On the defensive side, Miranda and Mishler each had six tackles to lead North Wood, with three of Mishler's tackles being sacks. Brothers Reyd and Ryne Garner, and Lopez each recorded four stops for the Panthers. Matt McCollough and Brad Guest each had seven tackles to pave the way for Elkhart Memorial. The Panthers (3-4,2-3 in the NLC) go on the road next week for the third consecutive time as they travel to Warsaw to battle the NLC coleading Tigers, while Memorial (34, 3-2 NLC) visits the struggling Wawasee Warriors. rolled up over 400 yards of offense on their way to a 3626 pasting of Elkhart Memorial, improving their record to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in the NLC. North Wood overcame the early loss of •starting quarterback Brant Nine, who went down off the next-to-last play of the first period with what is reported to be a seasonending broken arm. Backup Jordan Neverman stepped up ably, however, completing five of his seven passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns, one a 22-yard toss to fellow sophomore John Sittler in the second quarter and the other a 10-yard flip to classmate Cam Spitaels just before halftime. The second score was set up by David Zeltwanger, who stripped the ball from Memorial's Lance Parker at midfield and pounced on it with 1:15 to play in the half. Neverman then found Sittler on a deep post to the Charger 10, and hit Spitaels with the TD pass on the next play with just 28 seconds to play in die half, giving North Wood • 2214 advantage. North Wood then scored on their first two possessions of the third stanza on 32-yard and 31-yard runs by Yoder before Memorial's Louis Gates added two late TDs on a 57-yard ran and 64-yard catch-and-run. Memorial was denied the opportunity to pull closer as the Ptaither defense stuffed both twopoint extra point attempt* Sm FALL, (NQ9 B 2
