Their names will be published if they do not abandon the practice there. 100 Years Ago Oct. 2,1907 The once promising town of Locke, 2 miles north of Nappanee and one time boasting of more than 300 inhabitants is a thing of the past with nothing to mark the spot save an old church with services once every two weeks. This proves the power of railroads. In 1874 the B&O was built and started a little nucleus in the swamp where the town of Nappanee now stands with almost 3,000 people and many factories. One by one the new buildings of the once promising Locke were moved to Nappanee. 75 years ago Sept. 29,1932 The city firemen proved they were capable of putting on a good party Friday evening at Community Park for their wives and families by purchasing several hams, having them roasted at Huffman Bakery, coffee made at the B&B, salads made by Mrs. William O. Miller, with the fire boys making the lemonade and doing the serving. There were 54 in attendance. Hary Richmond, fire chief, was in charge and opportunity was at hand for children, wives and older folk to ride on the fire truck. 50 years ago Oct. 3,1957 Shivelys had a grand opening of their new appliance department in their remodeled basement sales floor with free gifts for visitors. The full line of Speed Queen laundry equipment and Hoover cleaners as well as Admiral "Slimline" TVs are on display. 25 years ago Oct. 6,1982 The Nappanee Public Library will be offering a unique opportunity for both students and adults to acquire valuable skills in computer literacy while playing computer games and writing actual computer programs. 15 years ago Sept. 30,1992 •Miss Indiana,Shelly Yoder of Shipshewana, was a most special guest for Saturday's Apple Festival parade. •Photo caption: Robert White and Colin Summer arrived in Nappanee on the 30th day of their trip from Oakland, Calif, to Manhattan, N.Y. on bicycles.
