Council discusses tax abatement
By Moody McFarland NAPPANEE The Nappanee Common Council plans to give a break to one Buss West Side Industrial Park business planning to expand its territory. At its regular meeting Monday, Sept. 4, the council discussed granting a threeyear tax abatement for GLS LLC., which acquired four acres of land adjacent to their building but outside of the Buss park's boundaries. Previously, Newmar had used the empty lot to move RVs. However, they later sold the property to GLS. The company plans to construct a

"I didn't have a testimony of ill health," she said. "I just wanted to have lots of energy" And the extra energy has come in handy, as Stickel offers multiple classes basdd on a variety of categories. Her most current is a five-week body detoxification class. She also offers courses and seminars on getting healthy and staying balanced, eliminating sickness through diet, adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, juicing and other topics. Before beginning classes or sessions, Stickel sets up a meeting time with each person to try to find out what their particular health issues are. 40,000 square foot building on the property. A tax abatement means that GLS will not have to pay the full tax amount on the property right away. Rather, they will work up to it in increments every year, until they reach the third year and begin paying the full amount. In the first year, accordtng to city derk-treasurer Kim Ingle, they will pay 33.3 percent on the property. The second year, the -rate will double and they will pay 66 percent. By the third year, they will have worked up to the full amount. This gives the company an incentive to build and expand locally. "We're glad he's growing his business here," Nappanee
hoods, towns and cities across the country. She also researched and wrote an edition on Elkhart. Though Nappanee history is front and center in the book, other towns represented include Wakarusa, New Paris, Foraker, Locke, Southwest and Jimtown. Rich with photos from as early as the 1870's, Wenger sites her source for many of the images as the Nappanee Public Library, which manages an extensive compilation of historical photos as part of the Evelyn Lehman Culp Heritage Collection. ual and what they hope to get out of their diet. However, Stickel says, she is not a nutritionist or a registered dietician. She cannot offer a diagnosis. Despite this, she is able to work with already-diag-nosed conditions. "You have to tell me what's wrong. That's fine," she said. There are two main reasons for adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, according to Stickel. One is the fact' that meat products contain a variety of hormones and other ingredients that could be detrimental to health. The other, Stickel believes, is that a vegetarian lifestyle is biblical. "It's based on Genesis 1:29, which says ' ... I give you every seed bearing plant on the face of the whole earth ... They will be yours for food.'" The biblical nature of the business also shows in its name, Agape, a Greek word meaning love. Because of this,
mayor Larry Thompson said. According to Ingle, the fact that the property is not in the Buss park was the main reason the company was able to receive the tax abatement. The property is at the comer of C.R. 101 and Cheyenne. GLS was one of the first businesses to build in the Buss West Side Industrial Park, since then, they have doubled the size of their original building. A public hearing for the tax abatement has been set for Monday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. OTHER AGENDA ITEMS •The Nappanee police and EMS departments are back on their feet after a lightning strike several weeks ago
Stickel is unwilling to turn anyone away who comes seeking help through diet and lifestyle change. "This business is a ministry," she said. "If someone were to come in on crutches and they didn't have a penny to help pay for this, I'll still help them." While Agape holds specialized class sessions, Stickel also meets personally with clients who may not feel comfortable sharing their health concerns with a group, or who may prefer the relaxed atmosphere or a one-on-one setting. "A lot of people, their diseases are their identities," Stickel said. A relaxed atmosphere is something Stickel has made a part of Agape. Customers may come in, have a seat, even take their shoes off if they desire. "One girl came in her PJs," Stickel said. Stickel also plans to begin a runners' group for women who have reached menopause. Stickel is trained through Hallelujah Acres in Shelby, N.C., which offers a healthy lifestyle through a vegetarian diet. While Stickel has many testimonies from people who

have overcome illness and disease through a vegetablebased lifestyle, she warns that desired results are not immediate. "It's not a magic thing," she said. "Also, it depends on the level of toxicity. You can have detox symptoms, where you begin to feel very ill." Shekel's lifestyle change came from many years of learning about nutrition and how the body handles nutrients from food. Prior to opening Agape Health and Wellness, she managed two health food stores, then Curves for several years. Her family has also been supportive of her chosen diet and lifestyle, and have even adopted some of her habits. "My husband gave up Cokes," she said. "And he seldom eats meat." Her children, now grown, have also come to enjoy various aspects of Stickel's vegetarianism. "My kids laugh," she said. "But they love what I fix, and always want more." Stickel and her husband, Dennis, have four children and 11 grandchildren. Those who would like more information about Agape Health and Wellness can call Shekel at 773-3492.
