Letter to the Editor,
I am writing this letter to acknowledge the children's department at the Nappanee Public Library. I continue to be amazed at the creative themes, activities and projects that are available for the children to participate in. I know that my daughter, Hannah, has always enjoyed the summer reading program and carnival, as well as the monthly "American Girl" doll meetings. She was especially thrilled with the trip this past May to Chicago and the recent "American Girl " doll sleepover. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Cheryl Myers and the staff at NPL for all of the time, energy and planning that is put into all of the activities. We are truly blessed to live in a community with such a wonderful library facility and a staff who dedicate themselves to providing the children with such quality programs and enriching experiences. Sincerely, Michaela Walter

put that much effort in it, it should be a nice prize," she said. The prize for the 12 and under age group will remain the same as last year, and all contestants will receive a participant ribbon. In addition, the winner in the 18 and older category will receive a free recording session at Icon Music Studio in Nappanee and- will perform live onstage at Amish Acres during the annual New Year's Eve celebration. The deadline for entry is the day of the event. While spaces are still open, they are limited. There is no entry fee. Those interested can sign up at the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce, 302 W. Market St. or visit www.nappaneeapplefestival.org. FOR PEOPLE AND PETS Those who enjoy showing off their favorite furry or scaly buddies are invited to enter the Pets and Pals Parade of Fashion. This is the first year for the event. Coordinator Cheryl Mattem was inspired by TV pet look-alike contests and pet fashion catalogues. "I heard of a look-alike contest on Regis and Kelly," she said. "They had people send pics in. (Later) I saw a catalogue with all these doggie fashions and thought it would be cute to have a doggie fashion show." Inspiration came from other sources, as well. "I’ve also gone to the 4-H dog show and seen the costumes," Mattern said. "It's

very cute." Mattem put her idea to work, and before long Pets and Pals was a reality. The contest will be judged in five categories, including biggest fashion statement, most original, most obedient, most photogenic and pets and pals look-alike. Mattem asks that contestants for the most photogenic and look-alike categories send photos to assist in judging. Kids and their pets are also welcome to participate. 'We're looking for people to dress up their dogs like their kids so they can have matching attire," Mattem said. Mattem invites contestants to be creative in their costuming- " They can be as elaborate as a tutu,” she said. "I've seen them look like alligators, a bumblebee, reindeer and Santa Claus and Miss Piggie and a frog, like Kermit.” Mattem especially enjoys pet look-alike contests. "I saw a picture of Cher Bono with an afghan hound and it looked like her," she said. In fact, Mattem’s husband Bill will enter the look-alike contest with their wire-hair Jack Russell terrier, Loui. Not only are dogs allowed in the contest, Mattem invites an assortment of pets to be a part of the show. "If somebody has a goat or a cat or a parrot or something, they can be in the contest too," she said. One winner in each category will receive $25. A best of
