Compiled by Margaret Encland-Neff (120 years to 50 YEARS) AND 120 Years Ago January 27,1887 Will rohrer has moved to town and on the first of February will take charge of the Comer Meat Market. John Pippenger and family have moved back from Wakarusa to Nappanee 100 Years Ago January 23,1907 The Thimble Cub members and their husbands were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dewey last Wednesday evening and the "light lunch" served fairly took guests off their feet. The surprise menu served to 50 guests contained roast pork, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, smear-case, "schnitz," apple butter, "twisters," bread and butter eaten by the light of tallow candles. Each guest was provided with an old-fashioned caseknife and 2-pronged fork as table service. 75 Years Ago January 29,1932 A young man of near Bremen was arrested at Joyland Dance Hall at Wyatt Saturday evening by Irvin Best, Night Watchman, charging theft of money from milk bottles in Nappanee. He was seen doing this Friday night and police pursued him, firing several shots past his car. Small deeds like this will only lead to something worse if the guilty party is not caught - . George Anglemyer, Artist-farmer living NE of Nappanee will exhibit 25 of his oil paintings at the Noah Lehman building Thursday and Friday of this week. 50 Years Ago January 17,1957 Lewie's Bi-Rite Supermarket has won a store inter-com system from Pict-Sweet for having the largest increase in frozen food sales of their brand in all the stores serviced in this area. 25 Years Ago Jan. 27, 1982 It was what you'd call a wild duck chase as a visiting mallard attracted attention throughout the city last week. Those seeing the bird believed that it might have been injured but it was apparently just a visitor who decided that he likgd Nappanee so much he'd stay for awhile rather than get back to his flock. Spirits were high for the showdown between North Wood and Elkhart Memorial in the Pit Saturday as team members raced onto the court through banners erected in their honor. Almost like big-time college basketball, wasn't it? And the Panthers went on to put on a big-time show, holding off a Charger rally for an 82-78 triumph. 15 Years Ago Jan. 22, 1992 Union Center and Sough Elementary schools have received notice that they have each earned both monetary Indiana School Improvement Award and the Four Star School Award, as part of the Indiana School Incentive Awards Program (ISIA). Brad Hartman is this week's Panther Player of the week. Brad, a sophomore, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Hartman.
