for a luncheon and programs would last for several hours. Nowadays, things are much less formal. Luncheons are no longer part of the club, and the programs are much shorter and to-the-point. The topics that the group discusses tend to be more local. They also try to focus on those issues pertaining to families and everyday living, like health. While the club consists exclusively of women, they do try to get their husbands involved as well. As an effort to include them, the club has initiated an annual men's meeting, at which time husbands are invited to participate in various activities. "We've had a lot of fun over the years," Leavitt commented. "I've just totally enjoyed knowing all the different women," said club president Pat Miller.

The club has also sought to benefit the community through donations to various not-for-profit organizations like the Nappanee Boys and girls Club and to the Nappanee Public Library's Heritage collection. "We have contributed to the arts in Nappanee and the education of women in Nappanee," said Pat. Membership to Current Club is by invitation only, and all new members are voted on. The club may have only 25 active members at a time, though there may also be associate, honorary and nonresident members. Non-resi-dent members are those who have moved away but who wish to retain their membership status. By tradition, Methodist ministers' wives are always considered honorary members.

By Mandy McFarland Editor NAPPANEE Financing. Advertising. These are just some of the often-intimidating topics associated with owning one's own business. Starting a business can be easier said than done, as many local entrepreneurs have learned. As a remedy to the situation, the Nappanee Area Chamber of Commerce brought in Staci Lugar Brettin of the Small Business Development Center, based in South Bend. It has been six months since Brettin began making regular trips to Nappanee, visiting with local business owners and entrepreneurs as needed and discussing with them the finer points of starting and/or maintaining a small business. Brettin visits Nappanee once a month. At this time, business owners are free to set up an appointment with her and to bring her their business-related questions. "Our number one challenge is that people are hesitant to come in for counseling because they feel that there is something wrong of has to be wrong with their business," Brettin commented. "But they may just need someone to talk to." Brettin has worked closely with several local business owners, offering practical advice on how best to grow and manage their businesses, as well as how to handle such areas as marketing, sales, human resource and employee management and so forth. Brettin works closely with downtown businesses, but she is also interested in working with the local Amish community and others who may operate out of their own homes.
