Bennetts join local church hand
BREMEN Pastor Gary D. Hinkle of Bremen Missionary Church, 2958 Elm Road, announces the addition of Jim Bennett, Jr. to his staff. He will serve as worship pastor beginning Jan. 21. Bennett has a diverse background in music and has had leading roles in various musicals and dramas. He has been selected as the guest soloist for several oratorios, including the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, where he sang all the bass solos in Handel's Messiah. He has traveled extensively, singing and ministering in churches, camps and conferences. He resides in Elkhart and is a school administrator with Wa-Nee Community Schools. Jim's wife Alisa is also an accomplished musician. They have two sons. Jim's father. Dr. Jim Bennett Sr., has served as president of Bethel College. Pastor Hinkle believes that the Bennetts will add much experience and expertise to the church staff and welcomes the community to attend and 'experience worship for themselves.

The Nappanee flouring mill is doing a thriving business judging from the number of cars being shipped away. 100 Years Ago Jan. 16,1907 Wawasee Protective Association will prevent the Sandusky-Portland " Cement Company from removing marl from Wawasee Lake with its dredges as that will destroy the beauty and purity of the lake, making it murky and muddy and destroying the spawning and breeding beds, as well as damaging hundreds of cottages and property. This sounds the death knell of the Syracuse Cement Company where $165,000 is paid out annually. 75 Years Ago Jan. 22,1932 The churches of Nappanee have united with the Anti-Saloon League of Indiana and will present a .temperance play at U.B. Church Monday, Jan. 25 Who Killed Earl Wright. The cast is composed of local talent: J.A. Abell, Roy Ruckman, Harley Geyer, Cora Stuckman, Mrs. Loic Lemler, Galen Roose and many more. The County Highway Superintendent's pay has been cut from $9 a day to $7 by the Board of Commissioners, and all other department employees were cut by two cents to 5 cents an hour for those making wages of over 35 cents an hour. 50 Years Ago January 24,1957 Coach Peden's Bulldogs, flashing speed and power, easily vanquished Syracuse 77-38 and

Columbia City, 79-64, to run their season record to 12 wins in 14 starts. In the Columbia city game on Saturday night, 6' 6" Larry Lakins set a new individual scoring record for Nappanee as he pumped in 20 field goals and free throws for 46 points. Union Center Church of the Brethren was filled with approximately 500 persons who paid' their last respects to a long-time pillar of the church, Reverend John D. Frederick, 75, who died Thursday night. He began his half century of service as an unpaid pastor at Union Center and only in the past dozen years has the church had a salaried pastor. 25 Years Ago Jan. 20,1982 Horses and people alike were probably wondering if it was safe to venture outside following last weekends record cold. Someone has to do the job of digging out, however, as strong winds caused many area roads to be drifted shut. It may not have been the blizzard that was predicted, but it was cold enough as the Goshen College weather station recorded a low of 16 below zero early Sunday. Elkhart County Clerk Peter Sarantos demonstrated the new voting machines at the Nappanee Rotary Club meeting last Wednesday. The new portable machines are expected to save the county over SIO,OOO in transportation costs compared to the older, larger machines. 15 Years Ago Jan. 15,1992 North Wood High School senior musician Mike Kerns was the center of attention last week as representatives from McDonalds presented he and the school awards received due to his being named Indiana's finalist in the McDonald's All American High School Band program.

The SAT will be given at North Wood High School on March 10, and the cost is $41.50. Students must register for the test by Feb. 2 in order to avoid paying a late fee. It is imperative that juniors take the SAT during the Spring of 2007. Some Indiana public universities had an unprecedented amount of applications turned in by October of 2006. Students should have taken the SAT by next fall in order to avoid a delay in submitting test scores to colleges. Even if students register on the College Board Web site, students need to enter the North Wood High School Code Number or the high school will not receive copies of the scores for transcript purposes. A limited number of registration forms are available in the Guidance office or students may register online at www.collegeboard.com. North Wood's School code number: 152495 North Wood's SAT site number: 15-605 SUMMER SCHOOL Due to changes in state funding for summer school classes, there may be changes to course offerings this summer. In the past, North Wood High School has typically offered biology, government, economics and drivers' education. Last year ISTEP English and ISTEP math classes were added. A decision about whether or not to offer summer school classes should be made by April 1. Students, during their scheduling meetings, will be advised that summer school classes may not be offered this summer and other options available. STUDENT SCHEDUUNG MEETINGS The Guidance Office staff met with junior students on Thursday, Jan. 11 during homeroom regarding scheduling. Individual meetings will be held with each junior from Tuesday, Jan. 16, through Tuesday, Jan. 23. Armed Forces graduate Army Reserve Pvt. Joshua A. Linville has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
He is the son of Dennis and Teresa Linville of County Road 150, Nappanee, Ind. Linville is a 2006 graduate of Northwood High School, Nappanee.
